NEW DELHI:
Manchester United have sacked manager Erik ten Hag after their 2-1 defeat to West Ham on Sunday, marking the end of his tenure with the club. The loss compounded a difficult season for the Red Devils, leaving them struggling to regain their former dominance in the
Premier League.
Ten Hag, who took over as manager in 2022, managed a total of 85 Premier League matches during his time at Old Trafford. Under his leadership, United secured 44 wins and suffered 14 losses, giving him a respectable win percentage of 52%. However, inconsistent performances and key defeats in crucial moments ultimately led to growing discontent among fans and the club's hierarchy.
Despite his promising start, Ten Hag's struggles to find a consistent winning formula, particularly in the 2024-2025 season, began to wear thin. The defeat to West Ham was the tipping point for the club's management, who decided to make a change in hopes of turning around their Premier League campaign.
Erik ten Hag had been brought in with high expectations after his successful stint at Ajax, where he had built a reputation for developing young talents and implementing an attacking brand of football.
United dropped to a disappointing 14th place in the Premier League table following their fourth defeat in nine league matches, a 2-1 loss to West Ham on Sunday. The team has managed just one win in their last eight games across all competitions.
"Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men's first-team manager," said a club statement.
"Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
"We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.
"Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited."
