Bhupinder Gill to be first Sikh assistant referee in UK Premier League match
Berkshire, UK, born Bhupinder Gill will become the first Sikh-Punjabi official to act as assistant referee in a Premier League match, when Southampton take on Nottingham Forest next month, according to a Sky Sports News report on Tuesday. The Premier League, which is the prestigious English men’s football league system, has confirmed that Gill, the son of Jarnail Singh, the first turbaned Sikh to officiate as referee in the English Football League, would run the line in the clash at St Mary’s on January 4, according to the report.
Bhupinder and his brother Sunny Gill followed in the footsteps of their father to officiate in the EFL. The two made EFL history in April 2021 when they became the first pair of British South Asians to officiate in the same championship match.
