GTA 6 Budget rumors point to massive $3 billion cost

GTA 6 has long been expected to be the most expensive video game ever made. However, a new set of findings suggests the true price tag may be even more staggering than anyone anticipated, and the budget for the upcoming title could end up exceeding the mark of $3 billion.
Essentially, the Reddit user u/Due-Vanilla-8294 went through and shared the official financial documents filed on a UK government website on r/GTA6. The same ended up revealing figures that sent shockwaves through the community, pointing out that the total cost could easily surpass $3 billion by the time the game launches later this year.

GTA 6 budget could exceed $3 billion, UK Government documents suggest

The findings come from publicly available financial filings for Rockstar Games UK Limited, which is the official corporate name for Rockstar North. It is basically the Edinburgh-based studio primarily responsible for GTA 6's development.
The aforementioned Reddit user compiled all available documents from 2020 to 2026. Additionally, they tallied expenses related solely to employee wages and salaries, tracking spending from the point GTA 6 is believed to have entered full production in 2019. The year-by-year breakdown is as follows:

• March 31, 2019 – March 31, 2020: £191 million
• March 31, 2020 – March 31, 2021: £223 million
• March 31, 2021 – March 31, 2022: £346 million
• March 31, 2022 – March 31, 2023: £316 million
• March 31, 2023 – March 31, 2024: £315 million
• March 31, 2024 – March 31, 2025: £282 million

Adding these figures together brings the total staff cost at Rockstar North alone to at least £1.6 billion, which converts to approximately $2.1 billion USD.

Why the real GTA 6 budget could be much higher?

The most striking aspect of these findings is what they do not include. The business address listed in the documents, 108 Holyrood Road, Edinburgh, corresponds only to the Rockstar North building. This means the $2.1 billion figure accounts for only one of Rockstar's many global studios.
Added to this, if we include marketing costs, infrastructure, engine development, and the contributions of other studios, the total investment in GTA 6 is widely believed to be on course to surpass the $3 billion mark.
This will certainly end up making GTA 6 the most expensive game in video game history. It will be an entirely different scale when compared to all the other titles that have been released until now.
With Rockstar’s upcoming offering set for a 2026 release window, all eyes are now on GTA 6 to see whether the product can justify one of the most remarkable production budgets in history.
