Fortnite’s developer, Epic Games, is about to refund millions of dollars to players all across the United States. The massive refund action that has been enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (
FTC) stems from a legal settlement. Players who got charged for in-game purchases, which they never intended to make, are finally about to see compensation land within their accounts. Here is what is happening and who is eligible.
Why does Epic Games owe Fortnite players millions?
FTC settlement compelled the $245 million refunds, as per reports after it was uncovered that there were some significant issues within Fortnite's purchasing system. Federal regulators have determined that deceptive billion practices, quite often called dark patterns, were adopted by Epic Games within this popular game.
The dark patterns Fortnite tactics quite allegedly tricked players of all ages. It made them make unwanted and accidental in-game purchases Fortnite, with a misplaced button press. Also, it’s been found by FTC that Epic Games failed to implement any adequate safeguards, allowing child purchases to rack up some substantial credit card charges without clearing parental consent. The company has even been criticized for users' account locks when they rightfully dispute unauthorized transactions in their banks.
How to get Fortnite refunds: All you need to know
$126 million Fortnite refunds being sent out now, is not the first wave of payments. Previously, $72 million was refunded to the player's account. Now, an additional 969,173 approved claimants are about to receive payments through

The window for filing the claim is still open. United States residents who believe they got wrongly charged between January 2017 and September 2022 can still make an application. Some eligible scenarios here include getting billed for any unwanted in-game items, finding unauthorized child purchases on the card, or having the account locked after the dispute charges.

The deadline for submitting the claim is approaching fast- July 9, 2025. File your applications online at the official FTC portal. Players who are under the age of 18 would need a guardian or parent to file it on their behalf. Approved claimants from the new round would start receiving their payments late in June 2025.
If you have filed a claim before February 14, 2025, FTC is still reviewing submissions. It is expected another round of Epic Games refund payments will be issued in 2026. A claim can be filed through the FTC refund portal. The exact refund amount varies for every claimant.
