MUMBAI: Outstanding opening spells from new-ball bowlers Arjun Tendulkar (3-24) and Minad Manjrekar (4-38) in the second innings handed Mumbai a comprehensive innings and 231-run win over Puducherry in the

U-23 CK Nayudu Trophy

quarterfinal at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday.

The visitors were bundled out for 141 in 32.3 overs after Mumbai amassed a huge 581 earlier on the third day of the contest. The in-form Sarfaraz Khan, who resumed on 60, added another 30 runs to his tally and was unlucky not to get to his three-figure mark.

The 22-year-old was bowled by medium pacer Santosh Kumaran while trying to cut a straight delivery. Tanush Kotian contributed 52 lower down the order.

In their second essay, Puducherry found themselves in trouble straightaway when opener P Surendiran had to retire hurt in the fourth over of the innings bowled by Tendulkar. The right-hander was hit on his elbow while attempting to play off his back foot.

In the seventh over, Tendulkar cleaned up skipper Sai with a peach of a delivery which swung back in through the gate. He then got wicketkeeper Yash Jadhav out with a sharp delivery which pitched on middle and off and ended up clipping the top of leg stump. Tendulkar’s impressive spell, however, was cut short after he suffered an injury in the leg.

Manjrekar, who had claimed a fifer in the first innings, continued his good form by getting the ball to swing away from the batsmen.

They largely ended up edging the ball to the keeper or the slip cordon. He ended with a match haul of 9-79.

BRIEF SCORES: Puducherry 209 & 141 in 32.3 overs (Manikandan 34; Manjrekar 4-38, Tendulkar 3-24) lost to Mumbai 581 in 139.2 overs (Y Jaiswal 185, S Khan 90; S Kumaran 3-121) by an innings and 231 runs.
