MUMBAI: Indian batsman Karun Nair slammed his first hundred in the County Championship when he scored an unbeaten 144 (238b, 22x4, 2x6) for Northamptonshire against Surrey on Day One of a Division One match on Wednesday. Nair's 16th First-Class hundred took the Northants to 359 for nine after Surrey chose to field first. He added 114 for the eighth wicket with Tom Taylor (66).
Nair had scored a triple century (303 not out) against England at Chennai in December 2016, becoming only the second Indian batter to achieve the feat in Test cricket. However, despite an average of 62.33 in six Tests, he was dropped from the team.
In another significant development, talented youngster Sai Sudharsan made his debut for Surrey, becoming, at 21, the youngest Indian to make his debut in County cricket since Sachin Tendulkar for Yorkshire in 1991. Sudharsan has played just eight first-class matches, in which he averages 42.71 with two hundreds. He has now joined a select group of cricketers who have played in County cricket before making their India debut.
He has also played regularly in the IPL over the last two seasons for the Gujarat Titans, and scored a century for India A for India's Emerging team in the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka last month.
