NEW DELHI: India's recently-concluded tour of Australia saw digital viewership figures on the host live streaming platform go through the roof. The long tour in fact became the most watched overseas cricket series for any digital platform in India.

After winning their maiden

Test series

(2-1) Down Under, India finished the tour with another historic first by registering their first ever bilateral

ODI series

triumph (2-1) on Australian soil.

According to official figures, the matches during the tour on the official streaming platform were watched by 50 million viewers overall, with a total viewership time of 7 billion minutes, 4.5 billion minutes more than what it was during the tour of England. India played a series of three T20Is and as many ODIs, besides a four-match Test series in Australia.

The rise in digital viewership for cricket, especially over the last few international tours has been quite a steady one. Overall, the South Africa tour at the beginning of 2018 attracted 25 million viewers. That figure increased to 30 million during the mid-year tour of England last year, before going up to 50 million for the tour of Australia.

The maximum number of concurrent viewers (highest number of people watching at the same time) at any given time during the recently concluded series in Australia was 6.9 million, during the third and deciding ODI in Melbourne. In comparison, the peak concurrent viewers' figure during India's tour of South Africa was 1.5 million, which went up to 2 million during the tour of England.

Mumbai topped the cities, in terms of digital viewership on the official host streaming platform for the series in Australia, followed by Pune, Ahmedabad, Lucknow and Patna. 90% of the digital viewers were men and 10% women. Not surprisingly, 45% of the viewers were in the age bracket of 18 to 24 years.
