India's cricket journey since independence has been marked by numerous historic achievements, from first Test victory in 1952 to winning multiple ICC tournaments under MS Dhoni's leadership and dominating Test cricket at home from 2013 to 2024.
The nation has witnessed breakthrough moments like Sunil Gavaskar becoming the first batsman to score 10,000 Test runs, the revolutionary launch of IPL in 2007, and most recently, victories in the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy in 2023-24.
India's greatest cricket achievements since 1947- India achieved its first Test victory against England at Chepauk in 1952, powered by Vinoo Mankad's 12-wicket haul. In the same year, they secured their first Test series win by defeating Pakistan 2-1 at home, with Mankad taking 25 wickets in the series.
- The team's first overseas success outside Asia came in New Zealand during the 1967-68 season under Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. India won the series 3-1, with spinners Erapalli Prasanna and Bishan Singh Bedi sharing 40 wickets between them.
- 1971 proved to be a landmark year as Ajit Wadekar led India to historic series wins in West Indies and England. Sunil Gavaskar announced his arrival with 774 runs against West Indies, while the spin trio of Venkataraghavan, Chandrasekhar, and Bedi dominated England.

- The 1983 World Cup victory at Lord's marked India's first major global trophy. Kapil Dev's team defeated the mighty West Indies by 43 runs, transforming India into a cricketing powerhouse.
- India's status as an Asian cricket power was cemented by winning the inaugural Asia Cup in UAE and co-hosting the 1987 World Cup with Pakistan. This period marked the subcontinent's emergence as cricket's biggest market.
- In 1987, Sunil Gavaskar created history by becoming the first batter to score 10,000 Test runs, achieving the milestone against Pakistan in Ahmedabad.
- The 2001 Kolkata Test against Australia saw VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid's marathon partnership help India overcome a 274-run deficit. Their efforts, combined with Harbhajan Singh's bowling, led to a series victory.
- Virender Sehwag became the first Indian to score a triple century in Tests, hitting 309 against Pakistan in Multan in 2004. This contributed to India's first Test series win in Pakistan.
- MS Dhoni's era brought unprecedented success in ICC tournaments. He led India to victories in the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy, becoming the first captain to win all major ICC white-ball titles.
