We are back for the run chase! The umpires are back out in the middle and the English players can be seen in a huddle before taking their places on the field. It will be the duo of Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra to open the innings for New Zealand, which means Will Young is pushed down to number 3. Jofra Archer will get proceedings underway with the new ball. Let's go...
... The Run Chase ...
Now then, 223 is another moderate total to chase down but there is plenty on offer for the pacers early on and New Zealand haven't been at their best with the bat either. Jofra Archer will be key for England if they are to have a chance of avoiding a whitewash. It should be an interesting run chase to say the least, so stick around as we aren't that far away from the second innings.
England will be grateful for their lower middle order, as at one point, even surpassing the 100-run mark seemed like a steep ask. The top order failed miserably yet again and all across the three matches, England's top 4 has accumulated a total of just 84 runs, which is the lowest ever by a top 4 in an ODI series of three matches or more, absolutely staggering. Unlike the first two matches, skipper Harry Brook couldn't bail his team out and it was Jos Buttler who sparked a fightback. However, England were 102 for 7 when he got out and needed a miracle. It did come in the form of Jamie Overton and Brydon Carse, who put on 58 runs. Overton went on to score a stellar 68 and took England to a somewhat defendable total of 222.
New Zealand opted to bowl first on a surface that had plenty of grass on it and neither Jacob Duffy nor Zakary Foulkes disappointed. The duo had the English top order huffing and puffing and had them reeling at 44/5 before we eventually saw a bit of resistance. It was then Blair Tickner who bowled a lovely spell and halted England's fightback with a couple of wickets. However, the Kiwis failed to clean up the English lower order and even though Tickner ended with 4 wickets, the hosts ended up conceding much more runs than anticipated at one point.
End of an epic fightback from Jamie Overton as England are yet again bowled out in this series, three times in a row now. A strong showing from the Kiwi pacers, which has been the norm throughout this ODI series and overall, New Zealand will be pretty happy with that first innings. As for England, it was another underwhelming day out with the bat and they will certainly have a long chat after the game about their approach.
