Heading into a blockbuster weekend - The IPL 2026 moves into its final stretch of the league phase now and every single game will further intensify the competition. Saturday, 16th May takes us to the Eden Gardens for the 60th match of the season as Kolkata Knight Riders take on the Gujarat Titans. The first ball of that game is scheduled to be bowled at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT). But our buildup begins in advance. Until then, we take your leave. Hope you enjoyed with us. To more fun rides ahead together. Cheers!
A tough road ahead - Well, well, well. What a jolt for Chennai Super Kings! Riding the crest of three consecutive wins before coming into this game, they run into a wall tonight and the damage is significant. Two games remain for them in the league phase, putting their ceiling at 16 points, and both are now must-wins and are tough ones to crack. But even that may not be enough. Such has been the nature of this tournament that 16 points could still leave them dependent on other results going their way. They head back home and will face the high-flying Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai on Monday, 18th May. For the Lucknow Super Giants, they will continue to play for pride and will take a trip to the Pink City to face the Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday, 19th May, and might as well play a party spoiler for them as well.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Mitchell Marsh receives the award for his outstanding and breathless knock of 90 off just 38 balls, which included 9 fours and 7 sixes at a strike rate of 236.84. Marsh says that it is nice to get a win, and as a group, they've stuck together well and it's nice to get a reward tonight. Further adds that they have a great group of people, some excellent young stars and it's just that they haven't quite performed well in the field. On batting with Josh Inglis, Marsh says that he's a fantastic player and knows him very well, playing together for Western Australia. On the pitch, he says that he's got used to the red soil wicket here and looked to maximise the Powerplay. On fielding a bit more this season, Marsh jokes a bit and says that, given Inglis' finger injury, he deserves to have a bit of time off in the field.
The victorious captain of LSG - Rishabh Pant says that a win definitely feels good, regardless of how the season ends for them. He adds that he sticks to the plan more often, and that is really good to see. He reckons that the first thought was to get two overseas to open and put Pooran on number 3, but things go here and there sometimes. He further says that they have been working on different plans, and the team they have is amazing. He ends by saying that he was ready to bat, but the idea was to give the players a chance who didn't get to bat.
... Time for the post-match Presentation ...
CSK posted a respectable total - What began as a disciplined LSG bowling effort slowly came undone at the death. Akash Singh was the pick of the attack, ripping through the top order with a clinical 3/26, and Mayank too brought real pace to the occasion. CSK, at that point, were wobbling at 52/3. But Kartik Sharma steadied the ship, first forging a recovery stand of 70 with Brevis, who made a start but could not convert, and then shifting through the gears to produce a dazzling 71 off 42 that effectively won the innings for CSK. Dube came in at the back end and swung hard for an unbeaten 32 off 16, with Veer chipping in handy, and together they milked a flagging LSG death attack for all it was worth to get past the 180-run mark.
Spiced up second half - With the asking rate just above run-a-ball, CSK looked deflated but Mukesh Choudhary prised out Inglis to end a 135-run opening stand, and off the very next ball, Marsh was run out at the non-striker's end in cruel fashion. Samad, promoted up the order, followed shortly after, and what had been a serene 135/0 had suddenly become 144/3. CSK had found a way back in, and the contest had some spice again. Interestingly, the likes of Pant and Markram were demoted, and it was Pooran's time to shine this time around. He was not at all fluent in the initial stage of his innings, but unleashed himself with four back-to-back sixes against Kamboj to put the game to bed in style.
The Bison unleashed - The pacers had every reason to feel at home on this spicy track, with hard lengths extracting good zip off the surface in the first innings. But Marsh refused to play along. He and Inglis, two Western Australians so accustomed to facing and feasting on short lengths, turned the blueprint on its head. Marsh put the best of CSK's bowlers off their lengths by sheer aggression, feasting on Kamboj for 28 in a single over and racing to a fifty inside the Powerplay as LSG stormed to 86 for nought. Inglis kept it ticking at the other end, rotating the strike smartly and feeding Marsh, who just kept motoring. By the halfway stage, LSG had already chalked off 124 runs of the target, effectively breaking the back of the chase.
The irony of it all - IPL is IPL-ing, as they say. The teams down the order are spoiling the party of the ones with serious chances to move ahead. Yesterday, Punjab Kings had the chance to muscle their way to the third spot, but were stopped in their tracks by an already eliminated MI side. Tonight, CSK had a golden opportunity to crash into the top four, and once again, a team with nothing but pride to play for, LSG, had the final say. The ripple effect is significant. Rajasthan Royals now find their playoff hopes blown wide open, and if they get the job done against Delhi Capitals on Sunday, that will take them into the top four, which sets the final week of the league phase up to be an absolute thriller.
LSG's star opener is next up - Josh Inglis says that they spoke before the game that it was important to try and win every game and put on a good performance. On the opening partnership, he says that he felt like he was just standing there because the way Mitchell Marsh played was amazing, and he (Inglis) tried to be mature about the situation. Mentions that the surface was a bit bowler dependent and feels that Anshul Kamboj didn't get enough skid and they knew how dangerous Noor Ahamad was, so decided not to take a risk against him. Further mentions that the wicket felt similar to the one he plays at in Perth and the ball was coming onto the bat nicely. Has a bit of a chuckle that when Mitch was hitting the ball, he ensured to stay in his crease at the other end and not wander out and ends by informing that his forearm is fine.
Let's hear it from the CSK skipper - Ruturaj Gaikwad reflects on the defeat. He says that there was something for the fast bowlers in the pitch when they were batting. Adds that their batters did well. They were targeting 170, but they reached 180, so their batters did well overall. He reckons that they came up with a plan for Inglis and Marsh, but Marsh played some extraordinary shots which took the game away from them. He further says that you just have to accept, and they showed some character, and the young boy Kartik Sharma played well, so going forward, they look confident. Ends by saying that they will try to adapt to the condition and take the learnings from their previous matches.
LSG stroll past CSK - This has been some run chase by the Lucknow Super Giants. For CSK, this is a stinging defeat that does far more than just add a loss to the tally. Their net run rate has taken a considerable hit, dropping them to sixth in the standings, with Rajasthan Royals climbing to fifth as a result. Their aspirations of making it to the playoffs have taken a serious blow. CSK leaked runs heavily in the first half, and even their best bowler was not spared. Spare a thought for Anshul Kamboj, who was put to the sword, conceding eight sixes in a spell of just 16 balls. Such is the cruel nature of this game that when you are having an off day, even your best is not good enough.
Anshul Kamboj to Nicholas Pooran, Six!SIX! Done and dusted, Lucknow Super Giants win by 7 wickets! Kamboj bowls it just back of a length, a bit straighter too, but Nicholas Pooran is waiting for it. Pooran hangs back and lays into the shot, heaving it across the line and beyond the deep mid-wicket fence for a biggie. For the second time tonight, Kamboj has conceded four sixes on the trot.
Anshul Kamboj to Nicholas Pooran, Six!SIX! Wow, Nicholas Pooran is in a hurry now. Again, it is in the slot, just outside off. Nicky P stays low and slaps it flat and straight down the ground for a third six in a row.
Anshul Kamboj to Nicholas Pooran, Six!DROPPED AND SIX! High and just long enough, but Kartik Sharma probably should have done better. Hard length on off, Nicholas Pooran swings through the line but gets plenty of height, not quite the desired distance. Sharma settles himself at the cow corner fence and tries to take the catch to his right, but he spills it over the fence, completely misjudging the trajectory.
Anshul Kamboj to Nicholas Pooran, Six!SIX! That's gone many a mile! A nothing delivery from Kamboj, just a regulation length ball, right in the slot on off and middle. Nicholas Pooran lines it up and whacks it over deep mid-wicket for a massive biggie. Just 18 needed now off 23 balls.
STRATEGIC BREAK! It should be a stroll for the Super Giants from this position as they need run-a-ball 24. The Super Kings have managed to make things somewhat interesting, but with the likes of Pant and Markram yet to come, they won't be able to turn this around without picking wickets. But as we have seen so often in this competition, you cannot rule out any possibility until the final ball is bowled. An uphill battle for CSK, LSG in the driving seat. Anshul Kamboj (2-0-39-0) is back on.
Mukesh Choudhary to Mukul Choudhary, 2 runs.Hard length, on middle and leg, Mukul Choudhary flicks it over backward square leg. Kartik Sharma runs to his right and does well near the fence. Keeps it to a couple of runs. 24 runs needed from 24 balls now.

Gurjapneet Singh to Mukul Choudhary, Four!FOUR! Streaky, but they will take it! Back of a length, on off, Mukul Choudhary hops a bit and looks to block it. Gets a thick inside edge as the ball goes through Sanju Samson, who dives to his left to take the catch. The ball races to the fence. 150 UP FOR LSG!
Gurjapneet Singh to Mukul Choudhary, No run.Oh! Much fuller, on off, Mukul Choudhary pushes it to mid off. Nicholas Pooran runs for a single but Mukul Choudhary sends him back. The fielder has a shy at the bowler's end but misses.
Gurjapneet Singh to Mukul Choudhary, No run.A stifled appeal for LBW but nothing from the umpire. Hard length, on leg, Mukul Choudhary looks to flick it but wears it on his pads. Seemingly there's height on this one, or maybe it pitched slightly outside leg. Hence, CSK do not review.
Gurjapneet Singh to Nicholas Pooran, 1 run.Gurjapneet Singh goes full, outside off, Nicholas Pooran uses the pace of the ball and guides it to third man for just a single.
Gurjapneet Singh (2-0-24-0) is back on.

Spencer Johnson to Mukul Choudhary, 1 run.Hard length, outside off, Mukul Choudhary opens the face of his bat and guides it towards short third for a single.
Mukul Choudhary walks out to bat at number 5. Still, no Pant or Markram.
Spencer Johnson to Abdul Samad, OUT! b Spencer Johnson.OUT! TIMBER! Spencer Johnson has the last laugh, and CSK still believe. Hard length, on middle, Abdul Samad stays back and looks to loft it, but misses it completely as the ball goes through Abdul Samad's bat and his pad and rattles over the middle pole behind. Abdul Samad makes his way back into the shed and cannot make the most of his promotion up the order. 135/0 becomes 144/3 for the Super Giants.
Spencer Johnson to Abdul Samad, Six!SIX! Superb from Abdul Samad! Spencer Johnson bowls it on a length, on off, Abdul Samad stays in his crease and powers it downtown for a biggie over long on. That's gone a long way.

Mukesh Choudhary to Nicholas Pooran, 1 run.Slower short ball, at the bodyline. Pooran swivels and pulls it to deep square leg for a single. Two wickets off the over, along with 7 runs as well.
Goodness me, what an unfortunate end to Mitchell Marsh's knock. CSK are back in with a sniff, but it should still be comfortable for LSG as Abdul Samad walks out to bat, not Aiden Markram or Rishabh Pant.
Mukesh Choudhary to Nicholas Pooran, OUT! run out (Mukesh Choudhary).OUT! MARSH IS RUN OUT AT THE BOWLING END! What an unfortunate way to get dismissed. And probably, the way he was batting tonight, this was perhaps the only way anyone was ever going to stop him. Full on the stumps at 138.8 kph, Pooran leans into the drive and hits it straight. Mukesh, in his follow-through, stretches out his left hand and gets his fingertips to it. The ball deflects onto the stumps at the bowler's end, and Marsh, backing up too far, has no chance of getting back in time. In fact, he doesn't even attempt to retreat and throws his head back in disappointment before taking the long walk back. Departs agonisingly short of what would have been a well-deserved ton. Lucknow Super Giants are 135/2 in 11.5 overs, needing 53 runs off 49 balls.
The next batter is in. It's Nicholas Pooran in at number 3.
Mukesh Choudhary to Josh Inglis, OUT! c Urvil Patel b Mukesh Choudhary.OUT! IN THE AIR AND CAUGHT! Finally, finally a wicket for CSK, but it feels too little, too late for them. Mukesh deceives Inglis by bowling the off cutter, short and outside off. It seemingly kicks up from the pitch as Josh Inglis prepares to whack it over covers, but ends up slicing it towards deep backward point. Urvil Patel walks in off the ropes and takes a comfortable catch. A good hand from Josh Inglis as he walks back into the dugout. The mighty opening partnership of 135 runs is broken. LSG need 53 runs from 50 balls.

Gurjapneet Singh to Mitchell Marsh, Four!FOUR! Marsh mayhem continues in Lucknow! A real loosener by Gurjapneet. It's a low full toss, outside off. Truckloads of width for someone like Marsh. He walks out of the crease, stands tall, hits it through the line and smashes it to the left of long off for a cracking boundary. LSG are making it look like a stroll in the park now as they are 124/0 at halfway.

STRATEGIC BREAK! Wow, what a Powerplay for the Super Giants and Mitchell Marsh has broken the back of the chase, especially in those last two overs. With 102 needed in 84 balls, LSG now have the opportunity to milk the runs in the middle overs and not take many risks. For the Super Kings, they desperately need a breakthrough and then some to wrestle back some momentum. There's still a long way to go, but if CSK fail to pick up wickets regularly, this game could soon be out of their reach. Also, Noor Ahmad comes into the attack now, right after the Powerplay.
