Nathan Smith's double-wicket nightmare - Ireland’s response started in the worst possible fashion under relentless pressure from the Kiwi bowlers. Nathan Smith turned the game on its head immediately, bowling a phenomenal first over that ended as a double-wicket maiden. He extracted lethal movement to dismiss Stephen Doheny and Cade Carmichael for ducks, leaving the Irish top order completely shell-shocked within the first six balls of the innings.

The Kiwi declaration - New Zealand started their day from an overnight score of 333/5, with Tom Blundell and Dean Foxcroft continuing to punish the Irish bowling attack. The duo stitched together a superb 158-run partnership before Blundell suffered an unfortunate dismissal, walking back after a magnificent 186. The Blackcaps delayed their declaration to let the debutant Foxcroft reach his maiden Test ton, but heartbreak struck when he fell on a nervous 98. New Zealand finally declared their innings at a colossal 490/8.
