PITCH REPORT ON DAY 1 - Isobel Joyce is pitchside and she says the weather is absolutely incredible today with temperatures hovering comfortably in the mid-20s, which means the 22-yard strip is a really good surface for cricket. Joyce notes that it feels nice and firm and the conditions are pretty even all the way around. Looking closely at the surface, Joyce points out that there is virtually no movement or structural cracks to worry about, and while there are a couple of very minor imperfections. Joyce does not expect them to affect how the ball behaves and she adds that the track offers much better, truer carry than is usually seen at this venue, which she calls a fantastic sign for this time of year.
The skipper of New Zealand - Tom Latham expresses happiness after getting his wish to bat first on a dry, high-quality surface boosted by a week of great weather. Since the NZ team last played a Test match in Tasmania, Latham notes that finding their rhythm quickly is their main goal before the series against England. Tom informs that Dean Foxcroft is making his debut as the team opts for a four-man pace attack.
The skipper of Ireland - Andrew Balbirnie acknowledges the honor of playing Test cricket against world-class teams and says that while Ireland have played good cricket in past matches, they must now focus on playing well for longer stretches.
