‘It’s painful to watch’: Mohammad Kaif’s brutal fielding criticism raises IPL 2026 alarm
NEW DELHI: The ongoing IPL 2026 season has come under sharp scrutiny for a worrying decline in fielding standards, with former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif leading the criticism after highlighting repeated errors and poor catching across teams.
The numbers underline the concern. Across 59 matches tracked by CricViz, fielders have dropped 153 catches while completing 541, resulting in a catching efficiency of just 77.9% — a steep dip for a tournament often defined by razor-thin margins.
Kaif, known for his elite fielding standards during his playing days, did not hold back in his assessment of recent performances.
“It’s painful to watch the fielding in this IPL. Today Yash Raj dropped KL when he was on zero. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi too misfielded. The young boy hasn’t taken a catch this season. While playing for India he needs to be sharper on the field. It is the duty of coaches to teach youngsters fielding skills. On their part, the boys should enjoy fielding and take pride in it,” he posted on Sunday night.
‘Very poor’ execution: Parag reacts after RR defeat
Kaif’s comments came on a day when Rajasthan Royals once again faltered in the field during their five-wicket defeat to Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
RR skipper Riyan Parag admitted that fielding lapses, along with bowling inconsistencies, cost his side dearly in a crucial match. “Very poor. You’ve got to be better than what we’ve done today. Extremely disappointed,” he said.
Parag stressed that RR failed to capitalise on a strong platform and allowed the game to slip away in both execution and energy. “We were in a pretty good space after 14 overs… it had to be 220-230,” he noted about their batting failures, adding that both bowling and fielding standards were also “not up to the mark.”
The RR captain did not shy away from responsibility either, stating that repeated underperformance in recent matches has left the franchise in a must-win situation in their remaining games to stay alive in the playoff race.
A wider fielding problem across IPL 2026
RR’s defeat has only added to the broader concerns raised by Kaif, with dropped catches and misfields becoming a recurring theme across teams this season. What was once considered a defining strength of franchise cricket — sharp athletic fielding — now appears to be under strain, with execution errors increasingly influencing match outcomes.
As the playoff race tightens, the fielding conversation has shifted from isolated mistakes to a systemic concern.
