India vs South Africa 2nd Test Day 2 Cricket Match Highlights: India win 'shortest' Test ever inside 5 sessions; tie series 1-1

India chased down a modest victory target of 79 to claim a seven-wicket win over hosts South Africa in the second test at Newlands on Thursday and share the two-match series 1-1 after an extraordinary game finished inside five sessions.

India seamer Jasprit Bumrah took 6-61 to bowl South Africa out for 176 in their second innings on the stroke of lunch on the second day, before the visitors came out swinging and completed the win in 12 overs as they reached 80 for three.

Rohit Sharma finished not out on 16 and Shreyas Iyer on 4, with Yashasvi Jaiswal (28), Shubman Gill (10) and Virat Kohli (12) being the other wickets to fall.

There will be plenty of scrutiny of the Newlands pitch with the match completed in 642 balls, the shortest ever test in which there has been a winner, beating Australia’s 656-ball victory over South Africa in 1932.

Day 1, Session 1 in a nutshell
A menacing Mohammed Siraj picked up career-best figures of 6 for 15 as South Africa skittled to 55 all out in the morning session on Day 1 of the Cape Town Test.

The pacer wreaked havoc with the new ball as only a couple of Proteas batters managed double-digit scores amid a horrifying collapse.

Jasprit Bumrah and debutant Mukesh Kumar provided Siraj with perfect support, grabbing a couple of wickets each as South Africa folded inside 24 overs.

Siraj conceded just 15 runs from his nine overs as he triggered an abject surrender from South African batters on a pace-bowling friendly pitch.

Captain Dean Elgar's decision to bat first after winning the toss in his farewell Test turned out to be a nightmare for the home side.

Kyle Verreynne made 15 and David Bedingham 12 as all the other remaining South African batters were dismissed for single-digit scores.

Jasprit Bumrah (2/25) and Mukesh Kumar (2/0) took the other South African wickets.

Brief Scores:

South Africa: 55 all out in 23.2 overs (Kyle Verreynne 15; Mohammed Siraj 6/15).

We've got quite a few days to prepare for this one. This is a new year, new day for us and we are going to come back and make a statement in this Test match. It's very important to be there mentally, you have to let your focus and determination and let your grit take over. It's not so much about the technique, it's more so about the grit and determination. This is a great opportunity for us to level the series and all of us are very well prepared and very well equipped to be able to win this Test match. It's a beautiful ground, lovely to be here, surrounded by the mountains on one side. We are really looking forward for this Test match.

IND vs SA Live Score: PITCH REPORT
Sanjay Manjrekar informs that there is grass inside the cracks. Reckons that the ball might behave as it does when it pitches on a barren patch. Mentions that South Africa is a very unique place to bowl and feels that seamers will continue to get help on every day of the Test.
13:15 (IST) Jan 03

Would've batted first as well. Looks a good pitch. We understand the challenge of batting first on that pitch, but nevertheless, there will be enough in the pitch for the seamers, so hopefully we'll cash in on it. Important to forget what's happened in the past. We understand the importance of getting runs on the board, and getting 20 wickets. Didn't happen in the first game but we're upbeat about what we can achieve here

Rohit Sharma

13:13 (IST) Jan 03

Pitch looks interesting. We're in a great position. Can't win a two-match series if you don't win the first - we've crossed that hurdle. Scoreboard starts on nought. We all know that. Starting well is going to be key against this Indian side

The scanners will be out on Shreyas Iyer too. Does he have the skill and stomach to wear a few on his body like the retiring Dean Elgar did in Centurion and all through the last series two years ago? Or is he willing to be known as a batting star only in less probing conditions? The same applies to Shubman Gill.
