But it's all happening from a quality length and there's nothing you can do as a batter when it hits that area and stands up steeply which we saw on happen countless occasions. Was it a 55 wicket? No. Certainly wasn't a 250-300 wicket. These types of pitches are dangerous for batters' physical health. Spinning pitches are dangerous to baters' reputation. Mohammed Siraj needed just 9 overs to bag 6 wickets, and India 23.2 overs to bowl South Africa out for 55. In reply, the visitors were comfortably placed at 153/4, before losing 6 wickets in 11 balls without adding a run. At stumps on a bruising Day 1 in Cape Town where pacers made merry as 23 wickets tumbled, the hosts managed 62/3 in their 2nd innings, still trailing India by 36 runs.

South Africa closed an extraordinary see-saw first day of the second and final Test against India at Newlands on 62 for three in their second innings, trailing the tourists by 36 runs after 23 wickets and several records fell on Wednesday. Aiden Markram (36 not out) and David Bedingham (7 not out) will hope to bat on and set India a challenging target on the second day.

First it was the six-fer from Siraj that forced South Africa to 55 all out in the first innings and then the Proteas pacers hit back, shooting out India for 153 around a horrible collapse. India then got rid of three South Africa batters including skipper Dean Elgar, Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs as 23 wickets fell in the day. 22 of them going to the pacers barring from a run out. On a pitch that had seam movement and offered variable bounce, batters had a really tough day with both the sides getting dismissed once each in the three session. India took a substantial lead of 98 runs but the hosts have cut it down to by the end of the day for the loss of three wickets. Mukesh Kumar picked up a couple of wickets while Jasprit Bumrah had one to his name in South Africa's second innings. At stumps, South Africa are for three with Aiden Markram and David Bedingham unbeaten on 36 and 7 respectively.

OUT! Wicket no. 23 of the day! Jasprit Bumrah strikes as Tristan Stubbs is gone for 1. A jaffa from Bumrah just outside off and the extra bounce does the trick again. Completely beaten by the bounce Stubbs edges it straight to keeper KL Rahul.

Rabada bowls a length ball in that corridor of uncertainty and Kohli goes at it with hard hands. Outside edge and Kohli is caught behind for 46.

KL Rahul, looking to ramp it over gully, edges it straight to the keeper and walks back for 8. Rahul's resistance ends as India are now 5 down with a led of 98 runs.

Shubman Gill also scored 36 but towards the end of the session India lost a couple of wickets, allowing Proteas to remain in the hunt. OUT! A two-ball duck for Shreyas Iyer and Nandre Burger now has three in the bag. A perfect ball from the left-arm pacer to the right-hander. A back of length delivery pitched on middle and it rose a bit extra again. Iyer was in no position to play any shot. Timidly defends it as the outside edge goes straight to the keeper. Iyer walks back without troubling the scorers as India are now four down in second session.
