'Can't expect a newcomer to...': KL Rahul on replicating the roles of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

NEW DELHI: KL Rahul, the captain of the Indian cricket team, acknowledged that despite the recently concluded 50-over World Cup, One Day Internationals (ODIs) currently hold the least priority among formats.

While the team intends to continue the template set during the global event, Rahul emphasized the challenge for newcomers to replicate the roles played by cricket stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.



'It will be too soon'

"I don't think a lot will change in terms of how we want to play ODIs, but can't expect a newcomer to go out and play the role of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli played in the World Cup," stated Rahul, underlining the need for patience in the development of new talents.

"It will be too soon, and you have to give them time to adjust, and there will be no pressure from my side."

However, he also addressed the broader perspective, acknowledging that the team is in the early stages of transitioning.



Focus on T20 World Cup

"I think it's too early to look at the bigger picture as far as ODI cricket is concerned. The focus is on the T20 World Cup, which is around the corner, and there isn't a lot of cricket left in terms of the Indian team, so the focus has shifted a little bit," admitted the skipper.

Despite the emphasis on T20 cricket, Rahul reiterated the significance of Test cricket, emphasizing that it will always be an important format for the country.



Rahul 'ready' to keep wickets in Tests

Rahul expressed his willingness to take up the role of wicketkeeper in Tests, stating that he would be open to keeping wickets during the 'Boxing Day' Test against South Africa.

Rahul, who is leading the ODI team in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, affirmed his readiness to perform any role assigned by the team management.

"If that's the role the management sees me during Test matches, [I am] happy to do that," stated Rahul, emphasizing his flexibility and adaptability to new roles.

Having faced challenges with injuries in 2023, Rahul expressed his eagerness to play as many games as possible for the country and contribute in various roles.

Tough to play all formats

In the context of a packed cricketing schedule and multi-format series, Rahul acknowledged that not every player can be available for every format.

He mentioned that the team trusts each player selected for their deserving opportunities and remains focused on delivering their best cricket.

As the stand-in skipper, Rahul is leading the team with a commitment to flexibility, adaptability, and the team's success being the top priority.
