Washington Sundar emerged as the chief destroyer in the afternoon session with figures of 3 for 30 from eight overs, while Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav chipped in with a wicket apiece. Siraj provided the initial breakthrough before Kuldeep benefited from a tactical move by captain Shubman Gill, who stationed Siraj at long-on to tempt Rahmanullah Gurbaz into a risky aerial stroke.
The Afghan batters repeatedly fell into India's trap. Gurbaz holed out trying to attack Kuldeep, while first-innings half-centurion Rahmat Shah failed to clear Manav Suthar at mid-off against Washington. Left-handed opener Sediqullah Atal, who had resisted strongly, also perished attempting to hit against the turn just before tea.
Earlier, Suthar completed a memorable debut haul of 6 for 33, becoming only the 10th Indian and seventh spinner from the country to claim a five-wicket haul in his maiden Test. His relentless accuracy ensured Afghanistan never recovered from their first-innings collapse.

A battle of patience - From India's perspective, the key will be to remain patient. On a surface like this, where there is enough assistance for the spinners, it can be tempting to go searching for wickets and drift away from the basics. Moreover, in the first innings, despite having a cushion of runs to work with, India were perhaps a touch too defensive at times, with the field spread out. Safely negotiated - A short passage of play before the break, and Afghanistan have negotiated it without any damage. The positive the visitors can take from those four overs was the approach of Sediqullah Atal, who looked far more proactive by using his feet against Manav Suthar. That should be the template Afghanistan need to follow if they are to counter India's spin challenge. They cannot afford to let the spinners settle into a rhythm and repeatedly hit the same areas.

Suthar's first-innings effort made him the 10th Indian and seventh spinner to register a five-wicket haul on Test debut, underlining the immense promise of the 23-year-old. His figures of 22-10-33-6 reflected the relentless pressure he exerted on the inexperienced Afghan batting line-up.
Veteran Rahmat Shah, who had become Afghanistan's first batter to cross 1,000 Test runs, once again fought hard with 60 in the first innings. He also resisted briefly in the second innings, but his attacking instincts proved costly as he miscued Washington Sundar to Suthar at mid-off.
Washington exploited the batters' impatience brilliantly to claim three wickets, while Kuldeep Yadav finally found success when Rahmanullah Gurbaz fell attempting a big shot after a smart field placement by Shubman Gill. Sediqullah Atal's dismissal off the final ball before tea further strengthened India's grip as Afghanistan's reckless strokeplay undid whatever resistance they managed to build.
