NEW DELHI: The Marsh brothers, Shaun and Mitchell, on Sunday emulated Waugh brothers, Steve and Mark, by scoring individual centuries and being involved in a century stand together. Against England in the fifth Test of the Ashes series, the pair struck century apiece besides adding 169 runs for the fifth wicket as Australia continued to have an upperhand on Day 4.
The older Marsh, Shaun, reached the three figures first with a cover drive for four after resuming on his overnight total of 98. He went on to score 156. However, there was some comical drama when the younger Marsh, Mitchell, had completed his second Test century. After completing the first run that took him to three figures, Mitch was stopped midway through the second run by Shaun for a hug. Both seemed to be unaware that the ball had not reached the boundary and was technically still in play. As soon as the pair realised their mistake, they hurtled towards their respective ends to complete the run.
Australian skipper
Steve Smith who was watching the proceedings from the dressing room applauded Mitchell for the milestone. But as soon as he saw the duo were in danger of getting run out, he frantically began gesturing for them to return to the crease. The reaction was captured on camera and has since gone viral. After the Marsh brothers returned to safety, Smith put both hands on his head in relief as others around him were seen having a laugh over the hilarious turn of events.
"That was my fault. Emotions got the better of me and I just wanted to give him a hug. I lost all concept of where the ball was...he pushed me off and said: 'You better get to the other end.' Thankfully it all worked out well. I was very happy for him," Shaun was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald.
Mitch said he wanted a high-five but Shaun went for the hug. "I pretty much went for the high-five and Shaun went for the hug and we parked in the middle and had a quick split second of panic and then hugged again after that," Mitch was quoted as saying.
