AUS vs ENG Live Score: Mitchell Starc scripts history, takes 100th Ashes wicket

Mitchell Starc ignited the opening session of the Ashes with a blistering new-ball burst that delivered both a historic personal milestone and the biggest early blow to England’s batting hopes. The left-arm paceman became the 21st bowler — and notably the first left-arm seamer — to reach 100 wickets in Ashes contests. His strike rate of 44.8 is the best among all members of that elite 100-wicket club.

But the moment that truly electrified Perth Stadium was his dismissal of Joe Root for a duck.

All eyes had been on Root before the Test began. England’s premier batter has enjoyed a stunning run of form over the past year, yet one glaring asterisk continues to shadow his otherwise illustrious career — he has never scored a Test century in Australia. His overall numbers in the country remain modest by his world-class standards, and this series was widely viewed as his golden opportunity to rewrite that storyline.

Ashes Live Score: Steve Smith at the toss

"I would have had a bat as well. Hopefully it seams all over the place this morning. I think the cracks are going to open up as the match progresses. Those (Injuries to Cummins and Hazlewood) are big losses but it opens up new opportunities as well. Boland has been fantastic and Doggett has been excellent in the Shield." - Australia's stand-in captain

ENG vs AUS, 1st Test Match Live Score: Ben Stokes opts to bat

"We are gonna have a bat. You try to take in as much information as you can. We will try and get some runs on the board and see where we go from there. It's been a long build-up, now we are finally here. It's a lot of hard work, determination. We have got a clean plan of what we want to do in Australia. Bashir misses out for us. So, we have got four seamers with myself also chipping in. We have made sure we have covered everything. (On Archer) He looks good, he has had injuries but he has worked really hard and he looks in good shape." - England captain after winning the toss

AUS vs ENG Live Score: TOSS TIME!

England skipper Ben Stokes wins the toss, opts to bat first against Australia in the first Test of the Ashes series in Perth today.

AUS vs ENG Live Score, 1st Ashes Test Day 1: Mitchell Starc delivered a devastating spell of fast bowling to dismantle England for just 172 on the opening day of the first Ashes Test in Perth. The left-arm pacer claimed a magnificent 7-58 — his 17th Test five-wicket haul — in only 12.5 overs as England collapsed after a promising start. Debutant Brendan Doggett added 2-27, including his maiden Test wicket.

Ben Stokes won the toss and batted on a bright morning, but England’s innings unravelled almost immediately. Starc struck in the first over, removing Zak Crawley for a duck, and later trapped Ben Duckett lbw for 21. Joe Root’s wait for a Test century in Australia extended further as he edged Starc to slip for a seven-ball duck.

Harry Brook (52) and Ollie Pope (46) briefly revived England, taking them to 105-4 at lunch. However, Starc returned after the break to bowl Stokes for six before Doggett removed Brook, who had counterattacked with a brisk half-century.

The tail folded quickly, with Starc cleaning up the lower order. England, who have not won a series in Australia since 2010-11, went in with an all-pace attack, leaving out young spinner Shoaib Bashir.
