Absence of senior players a big miss: Shakib Al Hasan

NEW DELHI: Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan on Wednesday expressed his disappointment over the unavailability of experienced players such as Liton Das. However, he remained optimistic, stating that the team possesses sufficient talent to compensate for their absence in the upcoming Asia Cup.

The upcoming match on Thursday will see Bangladesh squaring off against Sri Lanka, the reigning six-time champions, at Pallekele.

Regrettably, Bangladesh will enter the match without the services of seasoned veterans like Liton Das, Tamim Iqbal, and Ebadot Hosain. Each of them has been sidelined for different reasons. Liton Das was unable to recover in time from a bout of viral fever, while Tamim Iqbal and Ebadot Hosain are nursing injuries.

"Of course, it (absence of veteran players) is a big miss. If you talk about Liton, he has been part of the team for the last four or five years, and he was doing consistently well for Bangladesh.

Asia Cup 2023: Sri Lanka, Bangladesh look for winning start

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will be eager to shake off modest ODI form and spate of injuries to key players as they seek to start their Asia Cup campaign on a winning note when they face each other on Thursday.

Sri Lanka's run in the ODIs this year has been sub-par. They started the year with a 0-3 drubbing at the hands of India, and then lost to New Zealand 0-2.

The Islanders managed to beat Afghanistan at home before mounting a good run in the ICC Qualifiers in Harare, but the inability to lift their game against top opponents will worry them.

They will require runs from Pathum Nissanka (687 runs in 2023), Dimuth Karunaratne (481 runs) and Charith Asalanka (341 runs), their best batters this year so far, to challenge Bangladesh.

On the bowling front, spinner Maheesh Theekshana (23 wickets from 10 matches in 2023) and pacer Kasun Rajitha (14 wickets) will have to cover the absence of frontline bowlers.

Bangladesh will miss the services of injured Tamim Iqbal, pacer Ebadot Hossain and wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das, but that is only a speck in the larger picture.

Das was on Wednesday ruled out of the entire duration of Asia Cup as he could not recover from viral fever. The 30-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Anamul Haque Bijoy was named as Das' replacement.

Bangladesh, generally a strong force at home, lost ODI series against England and Afghanistan this year.

Captain Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Najmul Shanto have scored more than 400 runs this year, while youngster Towhid Hridoy too has made over 300. But a good chunk of those runs came against Ireland.

"But having said that this will give an opportunity to someone else and I hope they make full use of this opportunity," Shakib said here during the pre-match press conference.

Shakib hoped that young players like Towhit Hridoy, who was a part of Bangladesh's U-19 World Cup winning side in 2020, will put their hands up in the Asia Cup.

"As far as Towhit is concerned he is really playing well for us this year. He has done well in the recent LPL (Lanka Premier League) and that should give him a lot of confidence going into the Asia Cup. He is going to play for Bangladesh for a long time," said Shakib.

Over the years, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have constructed a heated rivalry between them, and instances like ‘Nagin Dance' added colour to it.

In 2018, Bangladesh bowler Nazmul Islam celebrated the Lankan wickets with ‘Nagin Dance' and later it became a flash point between the two teams and the fans.

However, Shakib was focusing more on the match and giving a good account of themselves in the Asia Cup.

"It is important to have a calm dressing room. I don't think of it as a rivalry. But whenever these two teams are playing, we play very good cricket, which is good for fans and the broadcaster.

"But yes, playing Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka is a tough test, and we want to play good cricket," he said.

Shakib said Bangladesh will have an eye on the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023, but their main focus will be to play well in the Asia Cup.

"As any other team, we are also looking at the World Cup. Having said that, the Asia Cup itself is a big tournament and we are taking this very seriously.

"A good outing here will give us a lot of confidence in the build up to the World Cup," he added.
