'Uzzie is very comfortable speaking his mind': Cricket Australia CEO backs Usman Khawaja's pitch remarks
Paul Marsh, CEO of the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA), expressed satisfaction with Cricket Australia's handling of Usman Khawaja's critical remarks about the Perth pitch during the recent Ashes opener, where Australia secured an eight-wicket victory over England in just two days.
Khawaja, the 38-year-old veteran opener with 85 test matches under his belt, had described the pitch as "a piece of st" after 19 wickets fell on Day 1. He later noted that the pitch improved for batting on Days 2 and 3.
Cricket Australia initially planned to seek clarification from Khawaja regarding his comments, particularly since the International Cricket Council (ICC) had rated the pitch as 'very good.' However, CA later decided against taking any action, stating that Khawaja's comments did not reflect the team's view of the pitch.
"It was refreshing. I agree with you, the AFL would have done exactly that (in fining him). I think it is okay for players to have opinions, and we don't have to agree with them. But one of the things I love about this sport is people are able to speak their minds, and Uzzie is one of those who is very comfortable speaking his mind," Marsh told SEN Cricket.
Marsh confirmed meeting with the team before the Gabba Test but indicated there was minimal discussion about the incident after CA's decision not to pursue disciplinary action.
"I met with the team the other day, There wasn't really anything to get involved in, given that Cricket Australia decided to not take any action. I think that was appropriate," he added.
The ACA CEO commended Cricket Australia's approach, noting how it allows players to express themselves authentically.
