Indian chess legend confirms participation for Norway Chess Women 2026 event
NEW DELHI: Indian chess legend Koneru Humpy will compete in the Norway Chess Women tournament for the third time, with the event scheduled from May 25 to June 5 in Oslo.
Humpy said she is excited to return to a tournament she enjoys both for its strong competition and friendly atmosphere.
“I’m really happy to be part of Norway Chess Women. It’s a tournament I’ve always enjoyed, not only because of the high level of competition but also the warm atmosphere and excellent organisation. I’m looking forward to playing in Oslo and competing against some of the world’s strongest players,” she said.
Humpy is considered one of the greatest female chess players of her generation.
She made history in 2002 by becoming the first Indian woman to earn the Grandmaster title at just 15 years old, and at the time, the youngest female grandmaster ever. In 2007, she crossed the 2600 Elo rating mark, becoming only the second woman to achieve that milestone.
She has continued to shine in recent years, winning the Women’s World Rapid Championship twice (2019 and 2024).
In 2025, she finished second at the FIDE Women’s World Cup, earning a spot in the 2026 Women’s Candidates Tournament and keeping her world title dreams alive.
Norway Chess COO Benedicte Westre Skog praised Humpy’s longevity and impact on the sport, saying: “Humpy has been at the very top for a long time, and that says a lot. Very few players manage to stay at that level while still pushing for the biggest titles year after year. She adds real strength to the field, and we’re very happy to welcome her back to Norway Chess Women.”
