stormed into the finals while the pair of
Gaurav Mithe
and
Livia Fernandez
emerged mixed doubles champions in the Maharashtra Junior (U-17 and U-19) State Selection
Badminton tournament being played at Ratnagiri on Saturday.
It was a busy day for Rohan as he had to play four matches – quarters and semis in both the categories -- on the penultimate day of the competition.
Top seed Rohan lived up to his billing and sealed his place in the Sunday’s summit clashes.
16-year-old Rohan thumped Aayush Khandekar 23-21, 21-7 in the U-17 singles semifinal to set up final showdown against second seed Pune’s Varun Kapur.
Earlier in the morning, Rohan, a Standard X student of Centre Point School, Katol Road, downed Pratik Dharmadhikari in straight games.
In the U-19 quarters, Rohan accounted for his citymate Samarjit Panday 21-12, 21-12 to enter the semis. Later in the evening, he ousted Soham Navandar 21-16, 21-17 to be in line for a grand double.
Second seeds Gaurav Mithe and Livia Fernandez rallied back superbly to edge past Pune duo of Yash Shah and Tanishka Deshpande 20-22, 21-14, 25-23 to clinch title in the U-19 mixed doubles final.
The unseeded city pair of Livia Fernandez and Sanika Durugkar shocked second seeds Anagha Karandikar and Nakshatra Hanchate 21-14, 23-21 in 29 minutes in the U-19 girls doubles semis. Livia Fernandez and Sanika Durugkar will lock horns with top seeds Mrunmayee Deshpande and Ramsha Farooqui of Thane.
