Asian Games 2023 Highlights: Women's cricket team wins gold; shooters, rowers continue India's medal rush on Day 2
Asian Games 2023: Indian women's cricket team clinched a gold medal at the Asian Games during their inaugural appearance, triumphing over Sri Lanka by a margin of 19 runs in a hard-fought, low-scoring final held on a challenging pitchy. Trio of Divyansh Panwar, Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Rudranksh Patil won Indias first gold by securing top position in the men's 10m air rifle team event. In Rowing, India's Jaswinder Singh, Bheem Singh, Punit Kumar, Ashish won bronze in Men's Four Final A. Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar then won bronze medal in men's air rifle individual final.

Boxer Deepak Bhoria, the World Championship bronze medallist and Nishant Dev on Monday delivered commanding performances in their respective events at the ongoing Hangzhou Asian Games. In the men's 51kg category, Deepak showcased his prowess, defeating Malaysia's Muhammad Abdul Qaiyum Bin Ariffin with a one-sided 5-0 victory, securing his place in the round of 16. Nishant demonstrated his skill and determination in the opening round of the men's 71kg event, where he secured a convincing win over Nepal's Dipesh Lama with a 5-0 scoreline.

Indian swimmer Srihari Nataraj concluded the men's 50m backstroke final at the Asian Games on Monday, securing the sixth position. Nataraj, participating in his second consecutive final within two days, recorded a time of 25.39 seconds. It's worth noting that if he had matched his personal best of 24.40 seconds, he would have earned the bronze medal.

Neha Thakur, Adhvait Menon and Eabad Ali had successful outings in their respective sailing events of the ongoing Asian Games on Monday. Thakur, who finished third in girls' dinghy ILCA4 race nine, improved one spot to reach second after race 10 with an overall timing of 24:48. Menon finished third in boy's dinghy ILCA4 race 10. In race nine of the event, he was placed fifth but made significant gain to finish on a high. Ali also was placed at third in men's windsurfer RS:X event with a timing of 23:55 after race 12.

WOMEN'S HANDBALL Japan outplay India in women's handball
The Indian women's handball team began their Asian Games campaign on a losing note, losing to Japan 13-41 in their group B clash. Menika, who netted four goals, was the sole bright spot for India giving them a fourth minute lead. But thereafter it was all about Japan as they fired on all cylinders to race to a 21-4 lead after 30 minutes. Japan pumped in 20 more second-half goals to open their campaign with a bang. Priyank and P Thakur struck three goals each, while M Sharma, Bhawana and S Thakur scored one each for India. For Japan, S Ishikawa was the leading goal-scorer (seven). Y Kitahara (5), S Hattori (5), K Ozaki (4), N Sahara (4), Y Yoshidome (3), N Aizawa (3), R Dan (3), H Matsumoto (3), A Ohmatsuzawa (2) and M Hatsumi (2) were the other goal scorers for Japan. India will face Hong Kong, while Japan will play Nepal in their next group match Wednesday. Hosts China are the other team in the group. Top two teams will make the semifinals slated to be held on October 3.

Indian women's rugby team lose four matches in row, end eighth
Indian women's rugby had a woeful Asian Games outing, losing all their four matches to finish eighth overall. First, the Indian women's rugby team were blanked 0-15 by Singapore to endure a third defeat on the trot. In their last group stage match, the Indian team failed to score a single point against the world No 35 as they lost its chance to qualify for the classification playoff for fifth-sixth places. Then in the seventh-eighth place classification India were beaten by Kazakhstan 7-24. On Sunday, India had lost to Hong Kong and Japan. India had finished seventh in their maiden Asian Games campaign at 2010 Guangzhou.
