Asian Games 2023 Highlights: Parul Chaudhary, Annu Rani clinch gold in women's 5000m and javelin throw
Asian Games 2023: Parul Chaudhary scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman to bag the gold medal in the 5,000m race at the Asian Games. It was Parul's second medal at the ongoing Asian Games, earlier, she had won a silver medal in the women's 3,000m steeplechase event on Monday. Parul produced an excellent finish in the women's 5000m as she overtook Japan’s Ririka Hironaka a few meters from the closing mark. Parul clocks 15:14.75. Japan's Ririka takes silver. India's Arjun Singh and Sunil Singh Salam clinched a bronze medal in men's canoe double 1000m event at the Asian Games. The Indian duo finished with a timing of 3:53.329 seconds to bag the third place and the country's only second medal in the event in the Asian Games' history. In the 1994 Hiroshima edition of the Games, India had bagged a bronze in the same event by Siji Sadanandan and Johnny Rommel. Uzbekistan's Shokhmurod Kholmuradov and Nurislom Tukhtasin Ugli won the gold clocking 3:43.796s, while Kazakhstan pair of Timofey Yemelyanov and Sergey Yemelyanov bagged the silver with a timing of 3:49.991s. World champion Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) locked an Olympic quota for herself by moving to the final while young Indian boxer Preeti Pawar (54kg) signed off with a bronze medal. Borgohain, the Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist, cleverly managed her bout against Asian Championship silver medallist Baison Manikon of Thailand to take a unanimous decision win and book her ticket for next year's Paris Games. Preeti, on the other hand, put up a good show but lost 0-5 to reigning flyweight champion China's Chang Yuan. She has already secured an Olympic quota.
