NEW DELHI: Sathish Sivalingam has been given the TOISA Weightlifter of the Year Award at the inaugural Times of India Sports Awards (TOISA) held at Gurgaon on Thursday.
Sivalingam was competing for the award along with the likes of Sanjita Khumukcham, Ravi Kumar, Mirabai Chanu and Sukhen Dey in the category.
Sathish Sivalingam entered the 2014 Commonwealth Games as an unknown quantity.
He was making his debut at the event and returned home a star after clinching the gold medal in the 77 kg event. The 22-year-old Vellore-based weightlifter finished ahead of compatriot K Ravi Kumar to bag the honour.
The Indian weightlifting contingent returned with a rich haul of 12 medals from the 2014 CWG. He also set a new game record by lifting 149 kg in the snatch in Glasgow.
He was a strong medal contender at the Asian Games in Incheon but unfortunately couldn't participate in the event due to viral fever.
