You must have read or heard the story of Samudra Manthan so during that time a kalash filled with nectar came of that milky ocean and deities and demons had a fight for that. A demon named Swarbhanu disguised himself as a deity and sat between Surya and Chandra to have a sip of that nectar, which was distributed by Mohini (Lord Vishnu). Unknowingly Swarbhanu drank the amrit and when Surya and Chandrama informed Lord Vishnu about it then he immediately smeared the head of Swarbhanu with his sudarshan chakra and that was the moment, when they became Rahu and Ketu because they already drank the Amrit and became immortal. The head of Swarbhanu became Rahu and the body became Ketu. It is believed that Rahu had a grudge against Surya so it swallows him periodically that's why Surya Grahan occur.
