According to Hindu scriptures, Goddess Bramacharini was born as the daughter of Parvati, King of Himalaya. She then left her home and underwent rigorous penance in order to marry Lord Shiva. She lived on fruits and flowers for the first thousand years, then on herbs for another thousand, and last on broken Bilva Patra leaves for another thousand. She continued to live for another thousand years after this, leaving behind food and water.
