There was a Brahmin named Sumant who had a daughter named Sushila, according to scripture. The sage Kaundinya was her spouse. After bringing Sushila to his house, Sage Kaundinya went to offer evening prayers by the river's edge. Sushila noticed that many women were praying and worshiping at the same time. She inquired of the women who they were praying for. The lady explained to her the significance of fasting for the day and worshiping Lord Anant. Sushila knotted a sacred thread with fourteen knots on her arm because she wanted to follow the Anant Chaturdashi fast.
The thread was tied on Sushila's arm, and Kaundinya questioned her about it. She explained to him how to worship Lord Anant. He pulled the sacred thread and threw it into the fire out of rage. After he disgraced Lord Anant, he began to lose all of his fortune. Sage later acknowledged his mistake and felt guilt for what he had done. He made the decision to undergo a rigorous penance till Lord Ananta appeared in front of him in order to forgive him for his transgressions. Despite making every effort and going through a lot of hardship, Kaundinya was unable to see the divinity.
He made the decision to end his life after realizing that all of his efforts were in futile. However, just as he was about to hang himself, Lord Vishnu intervened to save him. He then appeared before Kaundinya and counseled him to keep a fast on Anant Chaturdashi and worship Lord Anant for 14 years in order to regain his lost wealth. With the greatest sincerity, Kaundinya made a commitment and began keeping an Anant Chaturdashi fast for 14 years in a row. Devotees who fast and pray to Lord Vishnu on Anant Chaturdashi are said to be blessed with the fulfillment of their wishes.
Anant Chaturdashi is one of the most significant festivals of Hindus. In India, people commemorate this day as one of the most auspicious day when they worship Lord Vishnu. Goa and Maharashtra are the two states that celebrate Anant Chaturdashi the most. People pray to Lord Vishnu on this auspicious day. Since Lord Vishnu is referred to as Anant, or infinite, as the name implies, it is solely dedicated to honoring Shree Hari. The serpent named Ananta is believed to be the sleeping bed of Lord Vishnu.
By worshiping Lord Vishnu with great love and sincerity, devotees make the most of this day. It is also believed that in order to eliminate the Kaal Sarpa Dosha, those who are afflicted with Sarpa Dosha must worship the serpent Anant on this day in addition to Lord Vishhu. You are advised to organise a Kaal Sarpa Dosha Puja and ask the snake god to forgive you of all your past transgressions.
On the day of Anant Chaturdashi, Ganpati Visarjan is also celebrated in India with amazing splendor. Devotees dismantle the processions in which they carry Lord Ganpati and immerse him in the pond, sea, and river after ten consecutive days of worshipping the Lord. They give farewell to the Lord and pray that he will come again the next year to bless the followers.
