MAKASSAR: It was 27-year-old Gaurav Gills moment of truth. It was a day when he had to stand up and be counted and the Indian didn't disappoint. Finally, 'lady luck' smiled on him as he became the first Indian in the history to win a leg of the Asia Pacific Rally Championship.
The victory was even more sweet as he had come into the event as a rank outsider with Australian Cody Crocker of Motor Image Rally Team and Gill's MRF teammate Katsuhiko Taguchi locked in the battle for the overall championship.
The MRF driver won this leg with a timing of 3.03:23.9 seconds for the overall XIV stages and a healthy lead of 1:06.9s with Taguchi and co-driver Mark Stacey finishing second in 3: 04.30.8s.
"It's always a special feeling to be the first Indian to win a leg of the APRC Championship. I was on medicines, lost lot of fluid due to the heat and humidity. However this success should be attributed to Team MRF and our support staff who made my job a lot easier," a physically drained Gill told mediapersons at the end of the award ceremony.
"Thanks to my co-driver Jagdev who made my job lot easier. Lot of credit should be attributed to him as I took a healthy lead of 35 seconds during the first eight stages itself. Today, when I came out, I had only one thing in mind. I had to beat the bad luck. Be it narrow stretches or boulders, I had only the No. 1 slot in mind," the MRF driver said.
