LONDON: Could anyone keep up with this young man's math magic? How much time would it take for an average person to solve the following puzzle? 3.65 + 2.19 + 81.92 + 36.42 - 5.19 + 19.24 -14.47 + 5 = ?
This one had to be solved mentally 4.8 seconds. And 10-year-old Krish Nagrani did it, winning the Canadian national competition in mental math on June 7.
The competition was organized by UCMAS.
Krish was given 100 arithmetic problems to solve in just eight minutes, which works out to only 4.8 seconds to solve each math problem. Krish worked out all 100 math problems with 100% accuracy in mental math.
The objective of the competition is to promote whole brain development by stimulating either side of the brain. By performing quick mental calculations, students expand their mental capacity and develop skills such as time management, memory, concentration and problem solving - skills that are crucial to success in all areas of daily life.
Having won the title, Krish was obviously quite elated. He spoke to this journalist at length:
How do you feel when you hear that you won this championship? I feel quite happy and proud of myself about this accomplishment. It was the first time I have ever won a championship trophy, so I and my family and teacher feel really amazed, shocked and proud of myself as they were the ones who pushed me to do better in math each day.
How long did you prepare for this championship? I did 500 questions daily. I had to do 100 questions in eight minutes. I've practiced for three months in total, so that I could achieve 100% accuracy and that's exactly what I did.
What is your next goal? My next target is to do 200 questions in eight minutes. I have to practice more and push myself more.
Who is your inspiration? My sister Mehr inspired me to do the best I can. When I see my sister's work, she puts 100 % effort in her homework and gets great marks, and that's what I want to do. So I practice hard so I too can get good marks and win the trophy I had.
What would you like to become in your life? When I grow up I would like to be a professional soccer player, and win medals and trophies like they do in FIFA.
What's your advice for other aspirants who aim at winning this championship in future? Do about 500 questions each day, and check your work. If you obtain a bad mark, then try going a little bit slower, and if you are getting good marks at that, then try to pick up the pace. Once you're more comfortable with it, then you will get good marks.
