NEW DELHI: The Mumbai North-West Lok Sabha seat, which has fallen vacant following the death of Congressman and former cine star Sunil Dutt, may continue to be represented by a Dutt. Congress, it is believed, has decided to allot the seat to a member of Dutt's family. Though no names have been discussed, it is felt that Congress may ask Dutt's younger daughter Priya to step into her father's shoes if she agrees.
Congress may like to offer the seat to Priya keeping in mind Dutt's personal wishes to bring her into active politics and the popularity she enjoys among people in her father's constituency. Sources in Congress said the party was also impressed by the way Priya handled Dutt's election campaigns and work in his constituency in his absence. She used to personally supervise development work in the constituency and was by his side during political rallies and marches. Senior Congress leaders pointed out that the sympathy wave might also help Priya win the byelection. The Mumbai North-West constituency has consistently returned Sunil Dutt since 1984. Dutt did not contest in 1996 and 1998 due to his son Sanjay Dutt's alleged involvment with the underworld. Priya, along with her brother Sanjay and sister Namrata, was on Sunday in Haridwar to immerse the ashes of her father. "She is not in a position to comment on the issue right now," said a family friend. "Hopefully, once the mourning period is over, she may like to think it over and will convey her decision to the party high command," the friend added.
