CHANDIGARH: Preparations for International Yoga Day were in full swing at the Sector 17 Plaza on Tuesday. While a rehearsal was organized for participants in the morning, yoga mats and large carpets were rolled out across the market later in the day for the main event.

Kirron Kher expected to attend the early-morning event, Chandigarh Police have also put in place a security protocol to ensure nothing goes wrong. Five DSPs , 13 inspectors and 700 cops from operation, PCR, traffic and security wings of Chandigarh Police will be deployed on law and order duties in and around yoga venues at Sector 17.
All asanas to be performed at the event will be in accordance with the common yoga protocol given by the Union ministry of Ayush.
Government and private bodies that are contributing to the event include Patanjali, Art of Living, Government College for Yoga Education and Health in Sector 23, Brahmrishi Yoga Training College in Sector 19, Brahm Kumaris, Yoga Federation of India, Internatio nal Naturopathy Organization, Chandigarh Yoga Sabha, Bihar School of Yoga for Physical and Mental Health, Red Cross, Chandigarh Yoga Association, Himalayan Yoga, Sachitta Yoga and Chandigarh Police.
The one-hour event will begin at 7am and the entry will be open from 5am. People coming to attend the event will be allowed to park their car at the multi-level parking of Sector 17 for free. The UT administration has also installed LED screens at the main venue for a live telecast from Lucknow, where Prime Minister
Narendra Modi would take part in the yoga day function.
Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) has been asked to provide 40 buses for ferrying participants to the venue. In addition to main celebrations at the Sector 17 Plaza, yoga sessions will be organized at 50 locations in the city. It will also be performed at Sukhna Lake by NSS representatives, at Burail Jail by Yoga Federation of India, at the Sector 16 cricket stadium by the UT sports department, and also at Snehalaya, government schools, and parks in Chandigarh.
Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had performed yoga in a mega event at the Capitol Complex in which more than 30,000 people participated.
1.7k cops to join in
In all, 1,700 cops will participate in events to be organized at Sector 17 as part of celebrating International Day of Yoga. A press release issued by Chandigarh Police said 700 of its men and women will be participating in the main event at Sector 17 Plaza, and another 1,000 will be performing asanas at a function to be organized at the football stadium in Sector 17 under the supervision of DSP (central) Ram Gopal.
