Travel scams to avoid: What every tourist should know

Travelling is all fun and games until one of us gets scammed! One must remain vigilant of tourist scams. Look out for pretend holiday deals, fake money vouchers, and doctored rental ads; such scams can cost you money and your sanity. (source: Federal Trade Commission consumer advice)

2/8

Watch out for "Free" holiday offers

If someone calls, emails, or messages you that you won a free trip, be wary, particularly if they ask you to pay for fees or taxes in advance. Legal companies will never request payment for a prize you didn't enter. Always check the deal before you reply.

3/8

Beware of Robocalls

Robocalls that offer special vacation packages or cheap travel discounts are frequently illegal and used to get your personal or financial information. If you have not given specific permission to be contacted, do not respond. Never give out sensitive information on the phone to unwanted callers, regardless of how attractive the offer is.

4/8

Fake travel document websites

There are some scam sites that pose as issuers of international driving permits and other travel documents at unreasonable prices. These documents can be issued only by official government offices. Refrain from third-party websites claiming quick approvals, and always ensure the authenticity of any site before making payments or divulging your information.

5/8

Rental car scams for vacation

Thieves can hijack legitimate vacation rental listings or post fake ones, enticing travelers with photos and low prices. They may request payment via wire transfer, gift card, or cryptocurrency methods that are almost impossible to trace or recover. Always book from legitimate rental sites and secure payment sites.

6/8

Holiday package scams

Certain scammers provide false charter flights or package vacation deals at incredible bargains. Before you reserve, make sure that the charter operator is licensed by your country's Department of Transportation. Watch out for specials that have little information and speed you up with decisions, since these are typical scam techniques.

7/8

How to stay safe in an unknown country

Keep yourself safe by doing your homework on travel agencies and reading reviews on the Internet before reserving. Never use untrackable payment options such as wire transfers or gift cards. Always have all terms, conditions, and cancellation policies in writing, and never allow someone to pressure you into making a decision when you are not prepared.

8/8

Report suspected scams

If you suspect you’ve encountered a travel scam, report it immediately to the local consumer protection agency or authorities in that area. Reporting helps prevent others from falling victim and can assist authorities in tracking down and stopping scammers. Stay vigilant and help keep the travel community safe
