Gokul Ki Janmashtami 2025: How to celebrate Krishna’s birth like a local

Gokul Ki Janmashtami is not just any festival—it’s an emotion and an experience of a lifetime. Those who have witnessed the Janmashtami celebrations of Gokul, only they can understand the true meaning of selfless devotion and the joy the Lord Krishna’s birthday brings in their lives.
Gokul, a small town in Uttar Pradesh, is associated with Krishna’s childhood. On this day, lakhs of devotees from India and across the globe, immerse themselves in devotion to Krishna. Here’s how you can truly enjoy the magic of Janmashtami in Gokul like a local.

2/7

The midnight aarti at Nand Bhavan

Nand Bhavan is the place where Krishna was raised by his foster father Nand Baba. The midnight aarti performed here is among the most emotional moments of Janmashtami celebrations in Gokul. Krishna devotees come together and sing bhajans. The moment the clock strikes 12 (midnight), the doors of the room open and the idol of Krishna in his baby form is shown to the world. The view is so powerful that it will give you goosebumps and fill your eyes with happy tears. A moment hard to describe in a few words.

3/7

The colourful Jhulan Utsav

Jhulan Utsav is celebrated in Gokul with much fervor. There are days leading up to Janmashtami and Gokul celebrates this festival with idols of Krishna and Radha placed on a decorated swing. You can also join locals in rocking the swing gently and seeking the blessings of god.

4/7

The cultural processions and performances

Gokul ki Janmashtami is a celebration of a lifetime. The streets of Gokul come alive with processions with decorated chariots, folk dancers, and musicians. Little kids dressed up like young Krishna look absolutely adorable. Roaming the streets, playing and dancing their hearts out, it’s a sight to behold!

5/7

Relish Gokul’s special prasad

In any celebration, food plays a big part. Temples and community kitchens have hundreds of volunteers who come together to prepare and serve sweet delicacies including Krishna’s favourite makhan-mishri, peda, and panjeeri to devotees. Also do not miss the chance to taste the fresh and creamy makhan (butter).

6/7

The Dahi Handi celebrations

Matki Phod or Dahi Handi is one of the most popular and fun things to enjoy in Gokul. The Matki Phod (breaking a pot of butter hung high above the ground) is celebrated in Maharashtra as well. Teams of young boys prepare human pyramids to reach the pot. It is a delight to watch.

7/7

The devotional music

Throughout the Gokul nagari, you’ll get to hear bhajans, kirtans, and flute music which only takes you closer to Kanha. Spending time in a temple courtyard, listening to these melodies and enjoying a calming experience amid all the chaos.

Since Janmashtami attracts huge crowds and devotees from across the globe, it is advised to plan your trip well-in-advance. Also book your stay early and arrive one day before the main celebration.

In Gokul, Janmashtami is a normal day—it’s all about living tales of gods, love, devotion, and spirituality.
