But if you are in the US, you can have the same fun and spot herds of majestic animals from your car window. It’s South Dakota’s first and largest state park, tucked into the Black Hills. It’s home to one of the largest publicly-owned bison herds in the world. Oklahoma isn’t usually first on a wildlife lover’s bucket list, which is exactly why Wichita Mountains feel like a glorious secret. This granite-studded refuge is crawling (and galloping) with bison, Texas longhorns, prairie dogs, and the occasional golden eagle doing a fly-by.

Head to Montana’s National Bison Range for an adventure trip. The 19-mile Red Sleep Mountain Drive takes you up, down, and all around a gorgeous landscape dotted with bison, elk, deer, and even the occasional bear cameo. Smack dab in the Great Salt Lake, Antelope Island sounds like a fantasy setting, and it sort of is. Bison, bighorn sheep, pronghorn antelope (surprise!), and coyotes roam the stark, otherworldly terrain like they’re starring in their own slow-mo nature documentary.

If you like your wildlife drives with a side of adventure, Big Cypress National Preserve and Everglades National Park have you covered. Cruise Loop Road, a backcountry stretch off Tamiami Trail, and you’ll spot gators sunbathing in ditches. Herons, egrets, and the occasional python add to the cast of wildlife.
