MEA issues advisory for Indians in Nepal amid GenZ protests

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday expressed concern over the ongoing GenZ protests in Nepal and called for exercising restraint while urging dialogue to resolve the situation. The ministry also issued an advisory for Indian nationals in Nepal, asking them to remain cautious in light of recent developments.As reported earlier, the Nepal Government went ahead to ban access to all social media platforms that have not registered with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology formally, which led to violent protests in the country.In a statement, the MEA said: “We are closely monitoring the developments in Nepal since yesterday and are deeply saddened by the loss of many young lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased. We also wish speedy recovery for those who were injured.”Reiterating India’s position as a long-standing partner of Nepal, the Ministry added: “As a close friend and neighbour, we hope that all concerned will exercise restraint and address any issues through peaceful means and dialogue.”Highlighting the security situation, the MEA noted that curfews had been imposed in several areas: “We have also taken note that authorities have imposed curfews in Kathmandu and several other cities of Nepal. Despite the government’s decision to lift its temporary social media ban, demonstrations resumed, intensifying tensions across major cities.Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has announced an investigation into the violent unrest. According to reports, the protests have already resulted in the deaths of at least 18 people and left more than 250 injured.
