Indian Railways updates reservation chart timings: What it means for travellers
In an important recent update (12 December), Indian Railways has introduced major initiatives to make travel convenient and booking tickets easier for passengers. The railway has revised reservation-chart timings to give travellers earlier clarity on ticket status. The Ministry’s official release documents the scope and rationale of the changes, according to the Press Information Bureau (PIB).
What’s new from Indian Railways for passengers
The ministry has been progressively implementing advanced chart-preparation measures to reduce last-minute changes for passengers on Waiting List (WL) and Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) tickets. Now Indian Railways has introduced its new chart timing update:
For trains scheduled to depart between 2:01 pm and 11:59 pm, as well as those leaving between 12:00 midnight and 5:00 am, Indian Railways will now prepare the first reservation chart preferably at least 10 hours before departure, giving passengers earlier clarity on their ticket status.
The objective
The Railway Board said, “With a view to inform passengers well in time about the reservation status so as to remove the anxiety of passengers coming from the remote locations to get the long-distance trains, it has been decided to prepare the first reservation charts.”
What changes in railway travel
Indian Railways has revised the timing for preparing reservation charts so that passengers can know their ticket status much earlier than before. Before this, reservation charts were commonly prepared about 4 hours before departure.
Under the revised rules:
Reservation charts will now be ready at least 10 hours before departure for all trains.
This means travellers can check whether their ticket is confirmed, waitlisted, or RAC much sooner.
Indian Railways officials explained that new rule will help:
Reduce passenger anxiety about ticket confirmation
Help travellers make informed decisions
Enhance transparency in the booking process for millions of users across India.
How passengers will be affected
Now passengers will have a clearer idea of their ticket status much before which will help travellers with RAC or waitlisted tickets get more time to decide whether to cancel, rebook, or seek travel alternatives.
