IMD heatwave alert: Delhi braces for scorching heatwave as temperatures soar
As April unfolds, Delhi is already grappling with blistering heat, with temperatures climbing rapidly and already reaching 40 degrees Celsius in the coming days. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave warning for the next 48 hours, encompassing Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Gujarat, urging residents to take precautions as the mercury continues its upward trend. The intense weather has also prompted a red alert for Rajasthan, where daytime and nighttime temperatures are forecast to remain exceptionally high.
As per reports, the temperatures during the day and night will be extremely high, but the situation is expected to improve after 48 hours. Additionally, light rainfall is anticipated in the Himalayas for the next 4-5 days.

With the heatwave set to intensify, the IMD has emphasized the need for protective measures to prevent heat-related illnesses, which pose significant risks, particularly to vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly. Authorities are advising the public to stay hydrated, seek shade, and avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours to mitigate health hazards.

Children, especially infants, are at heightened risk during this heatwave due to their inability to regulate body temperature effectively. Dehydration can set in quickly, with symptoms including irritability, drowsiness, or vomiting. Young children may also experience heat rashes and heat exhaustion, making it critical for parents to keep them cool and hydrated. Teens and young adults, often active outdoors, face dangers like dehydration, sunburns, and heat cramps following physical exertion. Experts recommend frequent water breaks, sunscreen application, and rest in shaded areas to safeguard this group.
As Delhi and surrounding regions brace for the next two days of unrelenting heat, the focus remains on staying safe and prepared until the anticipated rainfall on April 11 offers respite. For now, residents are hunkering down, armed with water bottles and fans, to weather this early summer scorcher.
