Want to own a pair of silver juttis? Here’s where to buy authentic ones in India!

If you think sneakers and heels level up your style, think again. Here, we bring you a surprise that won’t stop you from planning a trip to Lucknow. Yes, and that’s for the silver juttis. Yes, pure silver! In Lucknow’s winding lanes, there are still a handful of artisans that are working hard to keep a centuries-old craft alive, one sparkling step at a time. All those who are curious by now, welcome to the glittering world of silver juttis, gem-studded shoes that once graced the feet of Nawabs and Begums, and now survive as a rare blend of art, history, and footwear.

2/6

From royal courts to city streets

The story of silver juttis begins in Lucknow’s Nawabi era. Master craftsmen, brought here from Amroha, perfected the art of turning sterling silver into wearable art. Each pair of juttis is painstakingly hammered, shaped, and decorated with intricate filigree patterns and gemstones, a delicate labour that transforms raw metal into miniature masterpieces. What makes them extra special? These aren’t just shoes; they’re a statement of heritage, opulence, and unmatched craftsmanship.

Meet the last keepers of the craft

Among the few remaining artisans is Hafiz Khan, a septuagenarian who has spent decades chiseling silver into ornate shoes. His workshop in Rajajipuram is a treasure trove of hammers, molds, and glittering silver sheets. An adult pair weighs around 100 grams of silver and the cost can go to lakhs (as per the live rates). It needs to be noted that this for Hafiz and his peers, each juttis is a love letter to tradition, passed down through generations, and is not solely for money.

Challenges

Despite their royal allure, silver juttis are facing a tough fight for survival. The trend of rising silver prices, dwindling demand, and younger generations eyeing easier careers have made this craft precarious. Most artisans can produce only 15–20 pairs a month, turning each creation into a precious artifact rather than mass-produced footwear. The shoes are primarily sought after during weddings or festivals, where brides and grooms flaunt them as symbols of elegance and heritage.

5/6

Not just for fashion, but investment

These juttis are more than ornamental shoes, they can be seen as an investment too. If they are properly cared for, they can recoup nearly 80% of the original price if resold. Artisans advise storing them wrapped in cotton, away from moisture, perfumes, or chemicals to prevent tarnishing. Every pair carries a story: the sweat of the craftsman, the shimmer of silver, and the echoes of a royal past.

Why buy

In a world of mass production, the silver jutti is a rare gem, a footnote of history you can literally wear. They remind us that true craftsmanship isn’t measured by speed, but by patience, detail, and love for the craft. For visitors to Lucknow, the bustling markets of Chowk and Aminabad remain the ultimate destinations to witness, and perhaps own, a piece of this living heritage. In short, Lucknow’s silver juttis are more than footwear, they’re time machines, carrying centuries of artistry, culture, and royal glamour, one glittering step at a time.
