Unusual international borders you can actually walk across

What if we tell you that you could cross an international border without having to pay for flight tickets or a visa? You might not believe that some places in the world allow you to simply walk from one country to another. Here are some unusual international borders you can actually walk across:

2/6

Belgium and the Netherlands: Baarle-Nassau

Baarle-Nassau is a unique town in the Netherlands that not only borders Belgium but also has Dutch enclaves within Belgian territory, which themselves include even smaller Dutch enclaves. Here, the border between the two countries is marked by tiles on the ground, which even run inside buildings, meaning that you could walk from one country to another by just covering the span of a room. Visitors and local residents in Baarle-Nassau enjoy cycling across the border and having coffee at iconic cafes which have half Belgian and half Dutch territories.

3/6

United States and Canada: Peace Arch Park

Peace Arch Park is a special international park that celebrates harmony and peace between Canada and the United States. It is located between the borders of Blaine, Washington, and Surrey, British Columbia. Here, you can roam around the two countries’ lands while staying in the park and experience the surrealness of a shared international border that is open for visitors to walk across.

4/6

France, Luxembourg, and Germany: Schengen

The name Schengen must ring a bell for every traveller planning to visit Europe. This is the very town where the Schengen Agreement was signed, as it is the intersection of France, Luxembourg, and Germany. This tripoint is marked by a monument with three pillars for each country. You can visit the town of Schengen to witness this glorious commemoration of history.

5/6

Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary: Bratislava

This spot will give you the opportunity to be at the crossroads of three different European cultures. You can wander through the streets of Bratislava, see its famous castle, and then head out to this tripoint to see the territory of three countries at once.

6/6

Switzerland, Italy, and France: Mont Dolent

If you want to add a sense of adventure to your experience of crossing an international border, you can hike instead of walking at this unique spot. Mont Dolent is the tripoint where Switzerland, Italy, and France converge. Beware that this is an advanced trek and not ideal if you have never tried mountain climbing. Here, mountaineers can have one foot in each of these three great Alpine countries while catching some of the most scenic views that Europe has to offer.
