Puducherry, a Union Territory, has a rich history and cultural heritage. A bustling town with a unique colonial charm, colonial-era architecture, and serene areas. The churches of Puducherry are testaments to the religious heritage as well as tranquil places and have beautiful architecture with stained glass and serene altars.

Let’s look at churches of Puducherry that are a must-visit:

Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

A Roman Catholic church with a Neo-Gothic style. This church is located on South Boulevard in Puducherry and is famous mainly for its unique Gothic architecture. It has beautiful architecture with rare stained glass which depicts the events from the life of Christ and saints of the Catholic Church. Gaining a lot of popularity amongst tourists and locals alike, this church also has statues of the four evangelists with lamps beneath them that describe their lives.

Immaculate Conception Cathedral

A mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore which was established in 1791 and has been demolished and rebuilt a lot of times. This is an active church where mass is still conducted in both Tamil and English. This church also holds great historical significance as Mother Teresa visited here when she came to Puducherry. This church is around 300 years old, making it one of the oldest tourist sites in Puducherry.

Our Lady of Angels Church

Also known as Église Notre-Dame des Anges or the White Chapel, this church was built in 1855 and has a Greco-Roman architectural style. Located on Dumas Street in White Town, which also gives it a local name ‘Dumas Church’. This is the fourth oldest church located in Puducherry and the most unique part of this church is that masses are conducted here in three languages—French, English, and Tamil. An active church where hourly prayers and daily services are conducted, they follow the Roman Catholic sect of Christianity. Tourists can also look at the stunning views of the Bay of Bengal from here.

St. Andrew’s Church

A church built in the Gothic architectural style in 1745. St. Andrew’s Church is an active church that works as a Roman Catholic chapel. One of the oldest churches in Puducherry, it is located in the Reddiarpalayam area. The most unique part about this church is that it brings together all castes for a religious feast, a rare event. This church also faced demolition during the conflicts with the British in 1761. Tourists can look at the inscriptions showcased here that are in Tamil for a deeper cultural and religious dive.
