When people think of canyons, destinations in the United States often come to mind. However, there lies hidden in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh, an area that has been gaining its share of recognition for being one of the best geological wonders of India. Known as Gandikota, which means "Rock Fort," this place is not just another vantage point from where one can enjoy the scenic views of a gorge. It is a place that has all the ingredients of nature, history, and architecture, making it unique to other places in the country.Gandikota is famous for the gorge that has been formed by the Pennar River, cutting into the Erramala Hills. For millions of years, the river had been eroding the quartzite rocks lying beneath the hills, leaving behind vertical rock walls on both sides of the river. This makes the area quite unique because it contrasts the dry and arid landscape of the Rayalaseema area. Gandikota's primary point of observation is conveniently placed near the historic fort. Travellers can reach the rim of the gorge, and the size of the gorge will become apparent almost immediately. For ideal viewing times, early morning and late afternoon hours work well, especially in the winter months, which are cooler.Nevertheless, describing Gandikota solely based on its gorge would not be enough as many aspects of the destination remain unknown. The historic Gandikota Fort is located in Gandikota village. This is among the best preserved forts of Andhra Pradesh and was built in the 13th century by the Kakatiya rulers. Throughout history, the fort changed hands and came under rule of various dynasties, including the Vijayanagara Empire, the Qutb Shahis, and the Mughals. The large expanse of the fort features several interesting monuments as well. For example, there are the Madhavaraya Temple and Ranganatha Swamy Temple that showcase Vijayanagara architecture. The elaborate carvings made out of stone and high gateways are typical of the south Indian art style prevalent during the medieval era.Another impressive building inside the fort is the Jamia Masjid. The presence of the Hindu temples along with the Islamic building highlights the political legacy of the region. One of the most interesting features about the fort is the sophisticated engineering employed at this site. For instance, the visitors will find that some of the ancient granaries have survived here till today. Also, the water management system was well-thought out. Since the fort was situated close to the cliff edge, there was no need for massive fortification in certain sections of the structure. The canyon and fort together make Gandikota unusual among Indian destinations. Many historical sites lack dramatic natural settings, while many scenic landscapes have little historical context. Gandikota offers both. The destination has grown in popularity over the past decade, particularly among road-trippers, photographers and outdoor enthusiasts. Its relatively remote location has helped it avoid the heavy commercialisation seen at some of India's better-known attractions. Therefore, the experience is centered around the landscape as opposed to the tourism facilities. Adventures tourists have plenty of opportunities such as trekking, rock climbing, rappelling, and kayaking depending on the weather and availability at that time. Additionally, camping activities are increasing where people prefer to camp overnight at the site so as to enjoy both the sunrises and sunsets over the gorge. It is advisable to tour Gandikota between October and February when the temperatures are considerably lower compared to the summers. During summer seasons, it can be very hot and not comfortable enough to explore the site during midday. It rains in the summer where the landscape looks much greener and the waters of Pennar River rise.Even with its popularity, Gandikota remains unique within Indian tourism sites. It is neither a traditional hill station nor a wildlife destination. It is not a major pilgrimage centre, and it lacks the urban attractions associated with heritage cities. However, it is the fusion of natural geology and historical importance that sets the tone for its uniqueness. In fact, for tourists who prefer visiting geographically developed places, Gandikota presents one of the most unique canyons in the whole country. Similarly, for those who are attracted to the study of history, there is the fort whose story can shed light on the centuries-long political history of the region. As domestic tourists begin moving away from popular tourist destinations, Gandikota emerges as an attraction precisely because of its uniqueness and Indian character. The canyon may draw visitors in, but it is the broader story of the place that makes them stay longer.
