Kerala beaches that turn beautiful in the monsoon season

Why go to other nations when you have those serene and beautiful beaches in your God’s Own Country? Yes, Kerala, the beautiful Indian state is dotted with a plethora of beaches that are loved by visitors, foreigners and locals alike. These beaches in Kerala offer the much-needed tranquillity so that you can relax by the shore, enjoy water activities. Some of the beaches here are also lined up by shacks offering delicious authentic cuisine of Kerala.

And August is the perfect time to enjoy beaches of Kerala as the weather remains pleasant and mostly, it’s not raining that much.

Kovalam Beach

Kovalam Beach is known worldwide for its three crescent‑shaped beaches, namely Lighthouse, Hawa and Samudra. The beach offers relaxing Ayurvedic massages and several interesting watersports activities. On special occasions, cultural performances are organised at the beach that depict Kerala’s rich cultural heritage. Art lovers can visit the Kovalam Art Gallery and Kerala Art and Craft Village nearby. Lighthouse Beach is a beloved attraction of Kovalam Beach; you can climb the Vizhinjam lighthouse and capture photos of breathtaking views of the coastline and enjoy the cold breeze hitting your face during monsoon.

Varkala (Papanasam) Beach

Varkala Beach, also known as Papanasam Beach, holds immense religious significance; it is believed that a dip in the waters here can wash away all your sins (papam). This is a white‑sand beach with pink laterite cliffs that appear as if they are protecting the sea. You can even collect seashells here and enjoy Ayurvedic treatments. During monsoons, the crowd is less, but nature is in full bloom. So you can enjoy walks at the shore of the beach in tranquility.

Marari Beach

Marari Beach is named after Mararikulam—a fishing village along the coast. This is an ideal beach for people who want to relax amidst coconut palms and golden sands away from city life. You can explore the neighbouring villages by walking or through cycling, giving you a glimpse of the rural lifestyle. The Marari Beach Resort is located near the beach, which offers you a chance to pick fresh vegetables and fruits from their organic garden and then cook them with their in‑house chef.

Cherai Beach

This beach is located on the north of Vypeen Island and is known as the gem in the crown of Kerala’s coastal treasures. This can be a favourite among nature lovers as dolphin sightings are common here. Chinese fishing nets, also called China Vala, are commonly sighted here. This beach is quite famous for the coastal cuisine available from street vendors here. The tiger prawns and the creamy coconut milk are a must‑try. During the monsoon season here, the waves are quite gentle and the surroundings seem refreshing and green.

Bekal Beach

This glistening‑water beach is located in the small town of Bekal to the west of the Malabar Coast in Kerala’s Kasargod district. One of the main attractions of this beach is the Bekal Fort located on the steep hills by the sea. The fort gives you the perfect view of the beach and attracts both history lovers and tourists. Bekal Beach has a tranquil ambiance as it is a secluded beach.

Poovar Beach

Poovar Beach, located at the southern tip of Thiruvananthapuram, is the point where the Neyyar River meets the Arabian Sea. It creates a magical view—especially during the monsoon season when the river carries sand, mud, and mineral deposits to the area. One can also spot a wide variety of flora and fauna here. This beach is a hidden gem as it can only be accessed by boat.

Thirumullavaram Beach

This beach is located around 6 km north of Kollam and is one of the safest beaches in India because of the low tides. Thirumullavaram Beach is known for its clear waters and the coconut and palm trees around it. You can also join the locals in religious beach rituals and take evening walks along the shore. This is a perfect beach destination during monsoon as it has gentler waves and you can surf and do other relaxed water activities. The monsoon season greatly enhances the beauty of this beach with rain dripping from coconut palms and wet sands.
