From India to Russia: Stunning frozen rivers from around the world

When winter tightens its grip on the world’s coldest regions, some rivers do something extraordinary, they stop flowing and turn into vast, frozen corridors of ice. The summer's roaring waterways become silent, and the landscape shimmer in winter, transformed by sub-zero temperatures and snowfall. In many parts of the world, frozen rivers are not just a spectacle to witness; they become pathways for travelling, sources of life, adventure spots, and even roads. From the high-altitude canyons of the Indian Himalayas to the endless white plains of Siberia, frozen rivers are a display of nature in its most spectacular and extreme forms. Here are five of the most spectacular frozen rivers in the world, each with a story to tell.

2/6

Zanskar River, India

The Zanskar River's famous Chadar Trek, which is a legendary journey across the frozen river, is worth trying out at least once in lifetime. In the winter months, the Zanskar River freezes completely, and a thick layer of ice forms that flows through deep gorges with massive rock walls on both sides. The temperature can drop to as low as -20 degrees Celsius, and ice sculptures and frozen waterfalls are formed. The Zanskar River has long been used as a winter route when mountain passes were blocked by snow. Today, it attracts adventure travellers from around the world, offering a rare chance to walk directly on a naturally frozen river.

3/6

Lena River, Russia

One of the longest rivers on Earth, the Lena River transforms into a colossal frozen highway during Siberian winters. Stretching over huge ranges in northeastern Russia, the river freezes so completely that ice roads are constructed on top of it, enabling cars to drive between distant settlements. Lena River is situated close to the city of Yakutsk, which is one of the coldest settlements on Earth. The magnitude of the frozen river is almost awe-inspiring.

4/6

Yellow River, China

Also known as the "cradle of Chinese civilization," the Yellow River has a fascinating winter transformation, especially in the northern parts. Parts of the river freeze, forming breathtaking ice flows, frozen waterfalls, and foggy banks. In some places, ice jams are created that form beautiful natural sculptures, while in other places, water flows through the ice, creating a fascinating contrast between motion and immobility. The winter Yellow River is not completely frozen end-to-end, but its icy segments offer one of East Asia’s most visually arresting cold-season landscapes.

5/6

Yukon River, USA

Flowing through Alaska and into the Bering Sea, the Yukon River freezes solid for several months each year. Did you know that the frozen river was an important winter route for indigenous people and later for gold rush settlers? The river connected villages when the land routes were impassable. Today, the frozen Yukon is still an important part of Alaskan winter life. Snow-covered ice plains extend as far as the eye can see, featuring dog sled trails, snowmobile routes, and winter festivals.
