Forget Zurich, and add these India’s own 8 scenic places that deliver pure Swiss vibes

You don’t need a Schengen visa or a Swiss bank account to experience the scenic beauty of the Alps. Turns out, India has its own stunning collection of mini Switzerlands—and they come with their own flavour of chai, chutney, and chutzpah.
So, what makes a place earn this rather snowy nickname? Lush meadows, pine-dotted valleys, sparkling snow-capped peaks, and weather that’ll make you want to stay there forever. These desi destinations mirror the postcard perfection of Switzerland, and must be visited at least once. So, here’s a list of places that will take you through India’s very own Alpine squad.

2/9

Khajjiar, Himachal Pradesh

It’s one of the popular hill stations in Himachal Pradesh, and belongs to that group of a limited number of places in India that bear resemblance to Switzerland. Nestled near Dalhousie, it has a saucer-shaped green meadow, a lake in the middle, tall cedar trees all around, and yes, you might find horses that you can ride dramatically like you’re in a Yash Raj film.

3/9

Auli, Uttarakhand

If skiing in Switzerland was on your bucket list, swap it for Auli. Blanketed in white during winter, this hill station is India’s ski capital. The slopes here are so good, even the most experienced ones love skiing here. In summers, it transforms into a green paradise with panoramic views of Nanda Devi and beyond.

4/9

Yumthang Valley, Sikkim

Forget Zurich, Yumthang is where flowers and snow dance together. Nicknamed the ‘Valley of Flowers,’ this alpine meadow in Sikkim explodes in colours during spring. Add snow-draped peaks, bubbling hot springs, and yak rides into the mix, and you've got yourself a Himalayan Switzerland.

5/9

Kausani, Uttarakhand

When Mahatma Gandhi visited Kausani, he called it the “Switzerland of India,” as he was deeply impressed with its beauty. With panoramic views of snow-clad Himalayan giants like Trishul and Nanda Devi, it's the perfect spot for poets, dreamers, and those tired of city traffic.

6/9

Barot Valley, Himachal Pradesh

This is one of those secrets the mountains keep to themselves. Barot Valley isn’t just scenic—it’s serene, wrapped in pine forests and made for those with a taste for adventure. Whether you're into trout fishing or prefer unhurried treks, this alpine gem near Mandi is where you get the charm of off-beat Switzerland.

7/9

Chopta, Uttarakhand

Alpine meadows? Check. Majestic Himalayan views? Check. Swiss-like silence interrupted only by birdsong? Double check. Chopta, often dubbed the “Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand,” is the starting point for the Tungnath trek, the highest Shiva temple in the world.

8/9

Munsiyari, Uttarakhand

Far away from the crowds, Munsiyari is a dramatic little town with giant views of the Panchachuli peaks. It’s a trekker’s paradise and a soul-soother for solitude seekers.

9/9

Coorg, Karnataka

We know Coorg isn't in the Himalayas. But what it lacks in snow, it makes up for in dreamy weather, misty hills, and those never-ending green coffee estates. Add cardamom, chilli, sandalwood and spice trails into the mix, and voilà! You've got a Swiss-meets-South-India kind of hybrid that smells divine all year round.
