Ditch Switzerland for these cheaper European destinations that offer just as much charm

Switzerland is the first image that comes to mind when we dream of divine Alpine beauty, charming small towns, beautiful waterfalls and scenic train rides. But all these dreamy experiences come with a hefty price tag which, let’s be realistic, is not affordable for all. There are travellers who save for years just for a week for these experiences which is so unfair.
But hey, don’t be disheartened as Europe is full of surprises and hidden gems which offer similar dreamy experiences at a much cheaper price! Yes, you read that right. You don’t have to burn holes in your pocket to explore charming villages, or European flair as there are other countries which are waiting for you.
On this note, let’s have a look at some budget-friendly alternatives that offer similar experiences at a fraction of the cost.

2/6

Romania

Romania is all about Bran Castle, Carpathians and Dracula! The country is the birthplace of the famous book character Dracula and offers mountain scenery like no where! The beautiful country is a combination of dramatic peaks mixed with folklore, mystery and history. The Carpathian Mountains rival the Alps in otherworldly beauty. And can you believe that places like Brasov and Sibiu are so beautiful yet underrated. Strolling here feels time-travelling to old-world Europe! The gothic spires, cobblestone streets, and budget stays, makes it a perfect alternative to Switzerland.

3/6

Portugal

Though it’s not a mountainous country, Portugal offers value with a combination of coastline, countryside and wines. Yes, the country is all about coastal vibes, European charm and vineyards. You can’t miss out on visiting the Douro Valley here. The place, with its terraced vineyards, feels like dream land. And can you imagine having all these experiences at low-cost. The cities like Porto and Lisbon, you’ll simply fall in love with the country.

4/6

Slovenia

Did you know that Slovenia, the hidden gem of the Alps, is also often called the ‘affordable Switzerland’? There are stunning lakes and myriad adventure sports—without the sky-high prices (of course). You don’t have to save for years for a trip to Lake Bled and enjoy interesting activities there, unlike Switzerland. There this beautiful island church and castle, which looks like a postcard come to life. The capital city Ljubljana is cozy, colourful and welcoming to people.

5/6

Bosnia & Herzegovina

If you are someone who loves nature, Bosnia & Herzegovina is the place for you. The nature lovers will be mesmerised with the scenic waterfalls and valleys here. The history lovers will instantly fall in love with Ottoman-style towns and Mostar city which is home to the iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge). It’s also a UNESCO World Heritage site spanning the Neretva River. Bosnia & Herzegovina is for sure an emerging budget-friendly destination offering Switzerland-like ambience, without the Swiss price tag!

6/6

Slovakia

This undiscovered European gem is all about High Tatras Mountains which are otherworldly. The country is perfect for mountain lovers and adventurers who want to enjoy hiking and skiing without paying a hefty price! Accommodation is also under budget and food is simply delicious, perfect for every palate. Travellers can explore grand medieval castles, magical villages, and national parks without being bothered by crowds or touristy rates. Go explore and you’ll know!
