6 nations with capitals older than Rome that every history lover should visit

Can there be places older than Rome? Are there destinations whose ancient origins often go unnoticed? Well, most think that Rome, with its Colosseum and cobblestoned piazzas, is perhaps the ultimate time machine. Officially founded in 753 BC, the “Eternal City” indeed wears its history proudly. But here’s the kicker, and that is there are several capitals around the world that were already bustling when Rome was barely a myth. These cities have been there for the longest time, and are best for all those curious travellers who are eager to explore their layered pasts.
So, here we have curated a list of six capitals older than Rome, where one can plan their next trip.

2/7

Damascus, Syria

Often called the world’s oldest continuously inhabited city, Damascus dates back to around 8,000–10,000 BC. It was a hub for traders, scholars, and conquerors from the Aramaeans to the Ottomans. Today, visitors can stroll through the labyrinthine Old City, explore the Umayyad Mosque, and browse vibrant souks that have stood for centuries. Every alley whispers history, but it’s also a place where travellers can sip sweet tea and watch life unfold as it has for thousands of years.

3/7

Athens, Greece

Long before Rome rose, Athens had already perfected democracy, philosophy, and theatre. Oldest recorded history is at least from 1600 BC, and had been inhabited for as many as 5,000 years. For travellers, Athens is a living museum with a pulse. Beyond climbing to the Parthenon for panoramic views, wander through the Plaka neighbourhood, sample meze at a taverna, and watch the sun set over ruins that once inspired Socrates and Plato.

4/7

Beirut, Lebanon

Mentioned in texts as early as 1800 BC, Beirut has always been a Mediterranean gem. Despite its turbulent modern history, the city has rebuilt itself countless times, and that resilience makes it fascinating to explore. Visitors can take in the National Museum of Beirut, wander its café-lined Corniche, and dive into the city’s nightlife. With Roman ruins peeking out between French colonial buildings and modern high-rises, Beirut is living proof that the past and present can share the same street corner.

5/7

Jerusalem, Israel/Palestine

Inhabited since 3000 BC, Jerusalem is not just old, it’s sacred to three major religions. Few cities carry such weight of history and symbolism. Travellers can walk the Via Dolorosa, pray at the Western Wall, or gaze at the Dome of the Rock. Beyond faith, Jerusalem is a sensory feast: spices in Mahane Yehuda Market, ancient stones underfoot, and city views from the Mount of Olives that feel timeless.

6/7

Lisbon, Portugal

Settled by Phoenicians since as early as 800 BC, Lisbon predates Rome by centuries. Its perch on the Atlantic helped launch Portugal’s Golden Age of Discoveries. Today, visitors can ride the city’s iconic yellow trams through winding streets, explore the Alfama district with its fado music, and enjoy fresh seafood while overlooking the Tagus River. Lisbon blends antiquity with breezy charm, making its long history an easy part of your itinerary.

7/7

Ankara, Turkey

Though only named Turkey’s capital in 1923, Ankara’s history began around 2000 BC as a Hittite stronghold. Later, it thrived under the Phrygians, Romans, and Byzantines. Modern Ankara is often overshadowed by Istanbul, but it rewards curious travellers. The Anatolian Civilizations Museum holds treasures from Turkey’s prehistoric past, while the citadel district offers sweeping city views and cobbled streets that echo with centuries of life.

Jerusalem is an amzing city. It is in no way the capital of Palastine. Which, to date, is not a country. But if you do want to give ''Palastine'' some points then Jericho is the oldest inhabited city in the world.Jaffa, in Israel, by the way is the oldest operating port in the world. But both cities are not capital cities.
