Indian rock-cut temples are one of the oldest forms of architectural expression that date back centuries. These architectural marvels also depict stories of the past, echoing the faith, artistry, and innovation of ancient civilizations. We all know about the Ajanta and Ellora caves as great symbols of spirituality and craftsmanship. There are a lot of other rock-cut temples and caves in India that are a must-visit. The Elephanta Caves are sculpted caves on Elephanta Island and mainly represent Hindu rock-cut architecture that dates back to between the 5th and 8th centuries CE. Visitors will spot some large monolithic sculptures. These rock-cut sculptures depict Hindu and Buddhist ideas and are made of solid basalt rock. Some sculptures found here include the Trimurti, which depicts a three-headed Shiva, representing Panchamukha Shiva. The caves have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and are maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

The Badami Cave Temples date back to the 6th century CE and are located in Badami, Karnataka. These caves are carved into sandstone cliffs and are decorated with Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist sculptures. These caves are important examples of Indian rock-cut architecture, mainly the Badami Chalukya architecture. The Badami Cave Temples represent some of the earliest known examples of Hindu temples in the Deccan region. One will find intricate carvings of Hindu deities such as Vishnu, Shiva, and other mythological figures. Visitors must visit this cave temple to know more about Karnataka’s historical heritage.

Pancha Rathas is a great example of monolithic Indian rock-cut architecture and is a part of the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Each of the five monuments in the Pancha Rathas complex resembles a chariot (ratha), and each is carved out of a single, long stone or monolith of granite, which slopes in the north–south direction with a slight incline. They are named after the five Pandava brothers and their wife Draupadi from the epic Mahabharata. These rock-cut cave represents the diversity of Dravidian architecture.

The Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves were known as Kattaka Gumpha or Cuttack Caves earlier and are a blend of natural and artificial caves that are of archaeological, historical, and religious importance. These caves are located near the city of Bhubaneswar in Odisha. The caves feature ornate rock-cut reliefs, including depictions of religious symbols, animals, and mythical beings. Rani Gumpha is the largest and most popular cave among the caves of Udayagiri and Khandagiri. One will also find influences of the Jain and Buddhist periods.

A rock-cut temple that is located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal in Tamil Nadu. This cave temple is the perfect example of Indian rock-cut architecture dating from the late 7th century. This temple also comes under the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram. The most prominent sculpture in the cave is that of the Hindu god Vishnu in the incarnated form of Varaha, or boar, lifting Bhudevi, the Mother Earth goddess, from the sea. The walls inside the cave have several striking mythological scenes carved in relief, such as Vishnu rescuing the earth, Vishnu taking three strides, and more.
