5 picture-perfect lakes in Meghalaya that deserve a visit at least once

Meghalaya enchants visitors with its rolling hills, misty charm, and pristine lakes that mirror its natural beauty. From vast reservoirs like Umiam Lake to serene escapes like Ward’s Lake and Thadlaskein, each waterbody carries great importance. Exploring these lakes offers a refreshing glimpse into Meghalaya’s harmonious blend of nature and tradition.

Umiam Lake

Also referred to as Bara Pani or Big Water, Umiam Lake is located 15 km north of Shillong. The name means “water of tears” and locally it is known as Dam Sait. Legends suggest that once upon a time, two sisters were travelling from Heaven to Meghalaya. However, during their journey, one sister lost her way, and Umiam Lake was formed as a result of the tears shed by the other sister in grief of the separation. A popular tourist spot here, it also offers water activities like kayaking, water cycling, scooting, and boating. The beautiful landscape is also perfect for photography.

3/6

Ward’s Lake in Shillong

An artificial lake, also locally known as Pollock Lake or Nan Polok, is located in Shillong, in the centre of the city, and is a famous tourist spot. The lake is in the shape of a horse and is located close to the Raj Bhavan. Around the lake is a botanical garden with footpaths and a fountain. The botanical garden has several orchids besides other floral species. The most stunning feature of this lake is the wooden bridge in the middle of the lake. One can also go boating and serene walks.

Thadlaskein Lake in Jowai

A man-made historical lake located on National Highway 6, it is also known as Pung Sajar Nangli. Legends suggest that in the Middle Ages a young man named Sajar Nangli and his followers created this lake by digging. The lake is a popular picnic spot and is also considered a sacred lake by the people of Raid Mukhta. They continue to offer sacrifices around the lake, and it is worshipped by a community called Niamtre.

5/6

Umhang Lake in Jaintia Hills

Umhang Lake is surrounded by dense green forests. This lake is attributed to Sajar Nangli, who dined at this spot and drank water from a spring to quench his thirst. He and his followers decided to create a lake unlike any other in the Jaintia Kingdom, so they spent several months digging this magnificent lake. This lake also holds great significance and is considered a gem located in a sylvan setting. Visitors can embark on delightful boat rides across the lake.

Pamphyrnai Lake in Nongstoin

Located near Nongstoin, this stunning lake is surrounded by lush greenery and is greatly known for its clear waters and peaceful atmosphere. An underrated gem, it offers great scenic beauty to everyone and is a picture-perfect spot.
